Six months ago you came into being, Spirited Soul! You have grown by leaps and bounds, given your co-creator’s limitations. You have learned to display photos, and links, and have your own well-developed Blogroll (an extensive reference list located on the right side of the Home Page which links visitors to my choice of informative and pertinent “Sites of Interest”.) I am so proud of you, me, us! 🙂

Here’s wishing us many more happy years of kinship, as we watch our knowledge, our confident self-expression, and our loving village expand.

You’ve taught me a lot about myself and given me a therapeutic avenue for creativity beyond my wildest expectations. You’ve allowed me to be the “photo-journalist” I’ve always wanted to be. 🙂

The Energy of Intuition

The word Intuition (1400-50, from the Latin word, intuit(us,) meaning to gaze at, to contemplate) is defined as “a fact or truth perceived by quick and keen insight or direct perception; a philosophy; an immediate cognition of an object not inferred or determined by a previous cognition of the same object; an object or truth so discerned; pure, untaught, non inferential knowledge.”

Synonyms are: clairvoyance, discernment, divination, ESP, feeling, foreknowledge, gut reaction, hunch, innate knowledge, inspiration, instinct, penetration, perception, premonition, presentiment, second sight, sixth sense.

In the modern, “civilized” culture, why such a dirty word? Liable of suspect, scrutiny, jest? I would imagine it has always been a dirty word among some circles, human nature hasn’t changed that much. But I feel I must come to the defense of such a noble and innate trait…for it defends, protects and guides us if we let it. Animals, including us, can tap into this instinct and use it for our very survival if necessary. The difference between other animals and ourselves is that we have a mind that can also rationalize, quickly talking us out of our gut reactions, and we can ridicule ourselves and others for giving into such follies…

People often don’t trust what they can’t see or explain, but isn’t most of our existence that way? Even science and language are mere manifestations of us trying to describe the indescribable in some fabricated way that we’ve agreed upon and called “language.” Words and ideas are based on conceptualizations of our own minds and cultural influences. Who’s to say what reality is and/or isn’t? Philosophers have long posed the idea that maybe the dream state is the true, or at least an equal, reality. Meditators and realized souls say reality on this plane is all an illusion of sorts….

I myself am a fan of whatever works. I’m glad I have a rational, conscious, functional brain and I’m glad I have my intuition to help guide it. The left brain (logical, sequential, rational, analytical, objective, looks at parts) and the right brain (random, intuitive, holistic, synthesizing, subjective, looks at wholes), keep each other in check. I used to be a person who relied primarily on logic. After having been lopsided for so long, through circumstance, I was forced to swing the other way towards my intuitive side -when I got divorced, tried to find my own way (to myself), and started doing the Energetic Bodywork I now do.

My Polarity Therapy teacher at the time could not provide the detailed explanations of theories that I was used to, and I wasn’t able to mentally grasp the subtlety of Polarity Therapy anyway. The more I tried to think about it, the harder it was. (I still have a hard time with that. I just know from experience that it is as real as it gets. I may not fully understand it, but I know how to successfully access it and deal with it, and I’m convinced that it works.)

When I finally let go, and my right brain got out of the way, I started to get much better results with the bodywork (and my life). When I didn’t listen to my intuitive voice, things didn’t turn out as well. For instance, I had to learn to be careful when working with someone else’s energy, that I didn’t alter it in a way that wasn’t right for them at the time, such as taking away their compensation before they had the resources to deal with what lay underneath, the real cause of their pain.

As a practitioner, your feeling to work on a certain area may be correct and the client probably feels the block there too and insists that you work on it. Indeed, that spot likely needs work, but this may not be the appropriate time to do it. In cases like this, I recommend listening to your intuition and following it, REGARDLESS. It most likely will come up again for work when the timing is right for them. Both you and your client will have to trust the innate intelligence of their energetic system, your ability to decipher that information, and to trust their healing process as it uniquely unfolds. This process cannot be forced, at least not with good results.

This work is definitely about technique, knowledge, experience and intention, but all of that wouldn’t be of much practical use without my intuition. Discovering my own truth, my intuition, was like discovering a hidden ally and now I readily come to its defense. This work and my clients have been my biggest teachers, along with my mentor Dr. Richard Metz.

I feel like one of my most important goals is to help others tap into their own intuition, to trust it, to let it help them. I think intuition is our higher God-self talking to us. Who couldn’t use that kind of help? Anyway, my intuition comes into play when I am working on my clients and reading their subtle energy fields. Intuition plays a strong part in what Dr. Metz calls “Energy Resonance Scanning,” which is actually the basis of the therapy he developed based on the Fundamental Field of Life Energy. I started by using a pendulum to scan the energy fields, now I use my hand or my mind’s eye to feel the resonance. It is not so hocus-pocus as people think. Anyone can do it with intention, practice, proper framework for asking questions (methodological and literal is best), trust, and confidence. And I find it consistently working, based on results, and client feedback.

With time and attention you can learn to do this for yourself. It may be like other talents though, some people are born with a gift and others may have to work harder to get there, and it may not come as easily. It takes daily practice and exercising that muscle! The less you try to control the outcome, the more confident you become, the more you trust, the more the intuitive process flows. Once you get there, you’ll never go back to being lopsided! At least I didn’t, nor do I want to. 🙂 In case you didn’t notice, the bottom line here seems to be TRUST. 🙂

Per Dr. Metz on this Topic:

Intuition is more certain and spontaneous, a deeper level of knowing that isn’t so constricted by conceptual framework.

Energy Resonance Scanning is defined as “a mindful use of one’s ‘felt sense’ in order to tune-in to the various energy frequencies of people, places or things.” Scanning is getting information within a specified conceptual framework and then getting the best answer within that context. You are trying to determine which concept resonates with the person’s energy.

Intuition includes Energy Resonance Scanning, but not all scanning is intuition. However, scanning and intuition can interact. You can use your intuition to initiate a scan and/or what to scan for. Or, you can use your scan to alert and guide you as to the need for getting an intuitive message, and what about. Intuition is global and scanning is a just a part of it.

Intuition is comprised of:

  • Higher Knowing – Certain and Spontaneous (i.e., Inner Voice)
  • Energy Resonance – Contextual “Tuning-In” (i.e., “Felt Sense”)
  • Psychic Phenomena – Non-Physical Information (i.e., Visions, “Seeing”)
  • Subliminal Processing of Sensory Information – Feeling the Vibe (i.e., Body Language)
  • Synchronous Resonance – “Chance” Harmony on Subtle Level (i.e., Use of Oracles)

Intuition is a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets!! And that’s the truth! 🙂

The Wounded Healer

Adding this video now was inspired by my last post, and the responses that were made by my wise and experienced friends. It reminded me of something I heard long ago about Chiron, The Wounded Healer, and how I related to it even back then, long before I got into this line of work.

At the end of this post is a beautiful video, with a soundtrack by one of my favorite singers, Loreena McKennitt. It explains so well how I feel, with the exception that I don’t call myself, nor am I comfortable with any one else calling me, a healer.  I consider myself a facilitator, helping to direct the universal energy to where I detect that it’s needed most, for the greater healing good of my client. The client’s own Innate Intelligence takes over from there. God is the only healer. And with God’s help, the only one any one can heal is their own self. As much as we want to, we can’t willingly change/fix others, or do their healing work for them, it is up to each one of us to take on our own path of healing, with God’s grace and the support of friends, family, therapists, etc…Being able to see through to someone’s hurt and pain, and not being able to take it away for them, brings on feelings of guilt, frustration and powerlessness…but we must meet people where they’re at, support and encourage them the best we can, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to do anyone’s healing for them. Ultimately, our primary responsibility is to investigate and heal our own selves to the point where we can re-connect to our own honest, true, and authentic whole self: mind, body, spirit and soul. It is only then that we will have the resources that we need to serve others without undue compromise to them, or ourselves, in the process (i.e., codependency, transference, projection, etc.).

I also want to say here, that even though doing this work is very healing for me as well as my clients, I am very careful about maintaining healthy boundaries.  Dr. Stone, founder of Polarity Therapy always said, “Give a session, get a session,” and he was right!  Sessions are sacred space, and I always pray for Divine protection and guidance, “Keeping what’s mine mine, and their’s theirs” exchanging energies that are only appropriate, beneficial and necessary… Then, I leave the rest up to intuition and the Big Kahuna. 🙂  I couldn’t even do the work I do now, with out having gone down into by own healing abyss, and risen from the ashes, without my spiritual beliefs and the help of Dr. Metz. I do still struggle, the healing path is a life-long journey that even with the bumps, gets better and better. It’s like birthing a baby, once it starts to make its transition out in the world, you can’t just push it back in, ignore it, and go on with your life, or major and dramatic problems will certainly ensue. And once it’s out, it is constantly growing and changing.

As it says in the video, spirituality and healing is directly related to art of the heart.  I can say for me, engaging in Energetic Bodywork really IS an art form. I’m constantly amazed at how it requires me to be open to the unexpected and really improv and ad-lib. Energy is that way; it doesn’t like to be pinned down.  I bet any musician, writer, sculptor, painter, etc., would say the same thing. Once one enter that creative space, and gets the self out of the way, the energy starts to take on a life of its own, with beautiful flowing grace you become a channel of creativity…literally and figuratively. You say you can’t do that? Well when the time is right, you will relax, let yourself go, and dive into the zone baby!

We are divine creatures after all, under all the dross, and art from the heart lets our light shine through!  Keep in mind though that exposing the light, means exposing the dross in the process, so don’t get me wrong…the art isn’t always going to be sunshine and butterfly beautiful, it will probably be downright putrid at times, but the process of transformation is a profound blessing, in all it’s up and down glory. God and his Universe is the Creator, the Knower and the Doer, with each one of us, and our best spiritual (not necessarily worldly) interests, as part of the Divine Plan. That’s what I firmly believe to be true.

Today’s “Note to Self” (Night and Day)

Even though I’m experiencing a Dark Night of the Soul at the moment, a doom and gloom which feels permanent :(…I need to remind myself that the Sun WILL come out tomorrow (and even if I can’t see it through the cloud-cover, that doesn’t mean it’s not there.)  ‘Change happens’, and luckily, it can always be just a day, or two, away.

It’s a good sign that I am capable of being the ‘Dark Knight’ AND ‘Little Orphan Annie’, all in one ‘Swell Foop’ — as I like to say.  Whether for bad or for good, it means I’ve not totally succumbed, yet, in one direction or t’other…

Except for today when I just needed to lie down, in solitude, feel sad, and have a good, well-deserved, healthy cry. And that, is okay.

A Spiritual Warrior never REALLY turns her back on the battle field, even if she gets lost along the way, falling face down in a puddle of mud, temporarily blinded, befuddled and bereft…After all, I am indeed a mystical ‘work in progress’ and tomorrow IS another day.

A Life in the Day (Philosophizing)

A Life in the Day (Healthy Self)

As a male sexual abuse survivor so wisely said on Oprah today:

“Coping isn’t the same as healing.”

If properly cared for, the wounds from our traumas can eventually heal, though we are left with the scars. They remind us of where we’ve come from, and survived. Evidence of victory.

It is interesting that when you combine the words “healthy” and “self”, you are given the edict to heal thyself: HEALTHYSELF!

All of us develop coping mechanisms in order to deal with tragedies that are overwhelming to us. “Coping”, though surviving, isn’t truly “living”.

We can be grateful that our body-psyche came to our rescue in the past, and when we have the proper resources within and around us, and the timing is right, we can take the next courageous step towards healing.

Let go….”Feel it to heal it”, as they say. The only way is through, not above, below or around.

Remember, all of OUR emotions are VALID to OUR experience of a situation. Tears are a salve (literally, not just figuratively), an acknowledgement and affirmation of our deepest, most vulnerable Self. Own your experiences and emotions, and then release them from your sense of personal identity. They are what make you uniquely you, but they are not YOU. Integration is key.

You may be worn, but you are NOT broken.

YOU are still whole, beautiful and loved.

Oprah and Oz spreading superstition…? Really?

Every one is entitled to their opinion, and I’m interested in hearing “opposite” points of view that contradict my own.  (For more of my thoughts on this topic, see my previous post. Hopefully we’ll hear Dr. Metz’ rebuttal at some point to the MANY issues that the “skeptics” have brought up).

One thing I did value for sure about the skeptic’s article, is it brought to my attention that Oprah’s favorite physician, Dr. Mehmet Oz, has a wife named Lisa who is an energy practitioner, a Reiki Master!!  How cool is that?!

Apparently Dr. Oz mentioned Reiki on Oprah in February 2007.  And in January of 2009, he had a series on his own show addressing alternative medicine. I’m putting that link on my permanent blogroll.

Dr. Oz says, “The next big Frontier is energy medicine”. Yay!  Now that’s the kind of publicity we need more of!!! From my point of view :).

Science, Spirit or Skeptic? That is the Question.

I just read the following entry at “The Skeptic’s Dictionary”, (see link below), where the healing art and science of acupuncture was described as “an ancient superstition”, dissing Oprah and Dr. Oz in the process:

I take offense at this, namely because it disregards and discredits another culture’s revered 5,400 yr. old tradition, which is based on their historical empirical findings. Though not expressed in modern scientific terms, those findings are still based on scientific principles.  (And there is a modern scientific theory that incorporates acupuncture’s traditional meaning and methods…it’s called Dr. Metz’ Fundamental Field Theory! Surprise! :)). Oh, and just to give things additional perspective, I’ve heard that Chinese practitioners have refered to our “relatively new 200 yr. old western medical viewpoint” as…”alternative medicine”!

Just because Traditional Chinese Medicine was discovered “pre-technology” or “pre-science”, to me, actually makes it more wonderful and amazing. Those ancients must have been so observant, in-tune with nature, and so smart! Granted, I’m not dismissing the fact that some things are deeply-rooted in superstition ONLY, and do not serve anybody well. However, there can also be potential for such strongly imbedded “superstitions” to provide a very valuable service and resource, by helping folks to maintain a sense of cohesion, continuity and order within their community, and the ability to feel like they have a bit of control over their environment. After all, isn’t that what we’ve all trying to do, past and present? In whichever way we go about it? … It’s called “Existential Angst”.

When traditions are purely based in fear and denial, that is never a solid foundation, though it does give some credence the “power of belief”, even if it’s in what might be considered a “placebo-type” activity to others.

Also who’s to say what is, or is not, “reality”, “illusion”, “science”, “spirituality,” “superstition”, or “an old wives tale”?!  These kind of thoughts and labels sound too judgmental and limiting, from my point of view. The Universe is much bigger and broader than all this “hot mess” that we’ve turned it into with our narrow humanly perspective. 🙂

I consider any dang phenomena that happens in this world to be very complex, not easily explained, whether or not you put it into a book (although, I’m too am biased since I think Dr. Metz comes pretty darn close!)…or in a cubicle, a confessional or on the altar, or stick some needles in it, and stew it in an herb pot!  I’m trying not to get too defensive, angry or irritated, because that just takes us all farther apart. I believe, you can’t knock it if you haven’t tried it! Understanding coupled with personal experience, is key. If something is foreign to you, instead of “knocking it” try to understand it and where it’s coming from, instead of letting fear and ego get the best of you!

Everything is subjective anyway, each and every one of us views life through multiple filters. (For instance, right off the bat I can come up with at least eight filters of my own: Being a 45- year-old female, raised in Santa Rosa, California, USA, by Depression-Era Catholic parents from the mid-west!)  The first step is realizing that fact about ourselves, and everyone else! This has the potential to bring us closer together, and to our own Truth.

A quote from renowned physicists, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow, from page 44 of their new book, “The Grand Design” (where they present their theory called, “Model-Dependent Realism”):  “Strict realists often argue that the proof that scientific theories represent reality lies in their success.  But different theories can successfully describe the same phenomenon through disparate conceptual frameworks.  In fact, many scientific theories that had proven successful were later replaced by other, equally successful theories based on wholly new concepts of reality”.

I ventured into all of this in the first place, because I was up late again last night, messing around on the internet and decided that I wanted to say a little something about MY definition of Spirit and Soul…for obvious reasons :).
As I’ve said before, I believe both are of Divine Origin, and are part and parcel of Universal Love and Knowledge:

SPIRIT = Our unique personality attached to this body, this lifetime. We HAVE Spirit! We are Spirited!
SOUL = Our unique little piece of God-Self, which is attached to our mortal body while we are in it, giving it animation in this life/lives to come. Our Soul and its Divine Origin are immortal and everlasting. We ARE Soul. We are Soul-Full!

The Universal Life-Energy that flows from above, into and out of our bodies, circulating in prescribed pathways, is what creates, organizes and sustains our physical body, giving us LIFE.

WE are the interface where God, Soul, Spirit, Mind and Body come together in Holy Union. That makes us co-creators, co-procreators, and co-conspirators! 🙂

That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ by it! (At least until I explore and learn something new). 🙂

Today’s “Note to Self” (Falling)

Everything happens just as it should, in its own time. Be patient, and let the leaves fall when, and where, they may.

If I don’t like where I land, I’ll just remember that one never knows what might come along next…wind, water, or getting hitched to the bottom of someone else’s boot :).

Being tossed around a little, feeling like I’m drowning, or getting stomped on, might initially seem like a ‘curse’. However, it may just be a blessing in disguise, taking me to places I never would have considered…or in a roundabout way to something I’ve always dreamed of!

It could just be a fun ride, causing me to feel liberated and getting lighter and lighter by the moment!

Whatever it is, ‘good’, ‘bad’, or otherwise, I’ll remember that nothing lasts forever…but my Spirited Soul :).”

Today’s “Note to Self” (Yin-Yang)

Spotted on a bumper-sticker today: “The Opposite is Also True”.

I will keep in mind that polarity is With-In and With-Out, and I will acknowledge all sides of a situation, including My Self. 🙂

One practical way I can do this is by using the more inclusive word “and”, instead of “but”. For instance, “I really want to be successfully empowered and I’m really terrified that I WILL be”.

This is a quote by my friend and colleague of Energy Medicine, Dr. Stephanie Evans.  This catchy phrase of hers is meant to remind us that Energy is the blueprint, the essence of Matter, of every thing and every body in this Universe.

Dr. Stone, the founder of Polarity Therapy always said, “As above, so below,” but it also works the other way around, “As below, so above.”  This means that the Energy flows in both directions, from the subtle (spirit) to the gross (matter), and vice-versa. In other words, what we are thinking or experiencing spiritually/psychologically does indeed effect our physical body, and how/what our physical body is experiencing definitely has an impact on our psychological state.

This seems obvious, but it is amazing to me how many people do not recognize this correlation, or even make a connection when it is happening…For instance, you start to get stressed on the psychological level, and all of a sudden you start itching, or getting a headache.  Over time, chronic psychological stress, on a conscious or un-conscious level, weakens the immune system, pulling energy from the energetic Poles, making one more suseptible to diseases such as cancer…Or, say you simply eat a fatty lunch, which destabilizes your energies on the biochemical level and all of a sudden you might find yourself feeling angry or on edge…which in turn causes you stress.  Feedback Happens.  The more it happens, the “denser” the energy gets.

Stress-Case?

We find at our office, and in life, that the primary cause for what ails us is… STRESS!!  That is no surprise, but it’s amazing how we chase after so many things, trying to feel better, except for the ONE thing that could help us. That is, to reflect and tend to what is REALLY ailing us, and do whatever we can to remedy the situation, with TLC for ourselves :). Here’s a little reminder…

The Causes & Solutions for Stress in Our Daily Lives

There are three components to the concept of stress:

1.)  The Stressor

2.)  The Processing of that Information

3.)  The Stress Response

The stressor is the stimulus that initiates the stress response. Connecting the stressor stimulus to the stress response, is the informational processing component of the individual (which of course varies from person to person, situation to situation).  Information processing by the individual is the component that determines WHICH stimulus is indeed a stressor to that person. This can all occur very swiftly, or build over time.

Thus we have:

Stress Stimulus + Informational Processing =  Stress Response.

The stress response is well-defined and involves all aspects of the individual, from psychological to physiological. This response is a “call to action” response from a threat, or sense of urgency, about something in one’s environment. It is designed to be a short-term event. Too much stress response, especially when it turns chronic, undermines our health.

The stress response is non-specific, it is not limited to any specific stimuli.  Any number of different stimuli, which can be ANY aspect of one’s life, can become a stressor and initiate a stress response.  The stress response is cumulative;  many different SMALL stressors can have the same effect as one LARGE stressor.

The key to managing stress is to address EACH of the three components:

1.)  Remove the stressor (which is not always feasible);

2.)  Change how we process the information so that the stressor’s meaning to us is not so compelling or threatening (via mindful reflection, meditation, counseling, energy treatments, etc.);

3.) Counteract the effects of the stress response (through energy/massage treatments, supplementation, exercise, rest/sleep, diet, fun, etc.).

These three approaches interact in positive self-reinforcing ways. For example, removing the effects of the stress response allows us to process information in different ways, changing the meaning of the stressor, and providing insight as how to more effectively remove the stressors, which in turn means less stress response.

Potential stressors are internal as well as external. Our thoughts can initiate a stress response without the presence of an external stressor.  For example, when our thoughts are difficult to control, negative, self-reinforcing, and part of a stress-creating pattern, we then have post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Conscious/unconscious internal conflicts can be a source of continuous chronic stress. Our impulses to act are blocked by conflict, building tension. We are compelled to act, but can’t, because our conscious/unconscious selves may see any other alternative as threatening in some way. The best approach to resolving INTERNAL stress is to handle in the same way as our approach to EXTERNAL stress, by addressing ALL THREE components.

What is (Advanced) Energy Medicine?

Energy Medicine:  From the 1995 book, Bodywork, by Thomas Claire (Page 247): “Energetic bodywork is on the cutting edge of modern thought, where scientist, mystic and sage meet. Practices grouped under this heading have a common goal of influencing a subtle invisible, electromagnetic flow of energy that surrounds and infuses the body and that is referred to as the human energy field.  This life energy is known variously as chi’i (Chinese), ki (Japanese), prana (Sanskrit), orgone (Reichian therapy), and bioplasm (Soviet research).  Energetic bodywork approaches represent contemporary interpretations and synthesis of age-old practices that are descended from a variety of healing traditions, including Chinese medicine, Indian Ayurveda, Tibetan Buddhism, and Western metaphysics.  They are complemented by contemporary insights gleaned from quantum physics, the burgeoning field of psychoneuroimmunolgy (PIN), depth psychology, Western medical practice, and modern consciousness research.”

Polarity Therapy:  A form of energy medicine developed in the 1950’s by Randolph Stone (1890-1981) an Austrian-born naturopathic, osteopathic and chiropractic doctor. Dr. Stone traveled widely and researched eastern philosophies and modalities extensively.  As a result of his research, Dr. Stone defined a “wireless anatomy” of polarized energy pathways in and around the human body.  He based his new findings on seeing traditional medicine in the context of modern physics, primarily as polarized electromagnetic energy.  This provided a modern explanation for the principle that it is the dynamic tension of energetic opposites which creates and sustains our universe.  (All nature, in fact manifests a polarity between positive and negative charges, with an intermediate neutral area.  All energy, whether positive or negative, is neither good nor bad.  Energy simply “is”).  The human body, then, is also comprised of these positive, neutral and negative poles, which exist in various zones throughout the body.  It is the magnetic forces of attraction and repulsion between these poles that propel the circulation and flow of life-sustaining energy in the body.  The art of polarity therapy lies in balancing the rhythmic flow of energy between these poles, thereby promoting and restoring health.  Dr. Stone named his approach “Polarity Therapy” because it is based on the premise that these vibrating fields of polarized electromagnetic energy within the body can be affected therapeutically by human touch and attention.  When we experience emotional, mental or physical trauma, the electromagnetic charge of the bodily tissues is altered, disrupting the polarity and causing blocks.  If these blocks are left untended, illness and disease are likely to develop, as well as feelings of mental and emotional imbalance.  (Taken in part from Bodywork).

Advanced Energy Medicine ~ Dr. Richard Metz’ Fundamental Field® Theory and Therapy:  Dr. Metz started with Polarity Therapy and Dr. Stone’s approach of understanding traditional medicine in the context of modern science, primarily electromagnetic energy.  Stone’s Polarity model did not include acupuncture or jin shin meridians, nor did he provide a scientific description of spirit/mind/body connections.  The Fundamental Field does these things. Dr. Metz has organized his thinking in such a way that he can describe simply, and access vast amounts of information, relatively quickly and easily according to how he thinks and knows the body works.  He understands the intricacies of our systems’ interconnectedness and therefore he knows the meaning behind what he does.

Dr. Metz’ brand of energy work is one that he has developed through 30 yrs. of education, research and training in psychology, chiropractic, polarity therapy, acupressure, quantum physics, systems theory, mind/body medicine, a successful private practice, and a highly integrated intuitive sense.  His work is groundbreaking in several ways.  It theoretically unites the formerly separate healing disciplines of energy medicine – ayurveda, acupuncture/acupressure, jin shin and polarity therapy — all branches of the same family tree.  By integrating these disciplines into one therapeutic approach, Dr. Metz has created a distinct method which is as efficient as it is effective.  It is based on a scientific theory that he has developed which illustrates exactly how our body, mind, spirit and emotions are energetically intertwined, and how we as humans are connected to the spiritual and physical realms of creation via a specific energy pattern he’s named the Fundamental Field (FF).

The bodywork that I offer promotes effective self-healing by facilitating the movement, unblocking and balancing of your system’s subtle, magnetically polarized Life-Energy, from which all things physical manifest.  My work addresses your physical, mental, and emotional energy fields which are interconnected within you and combine to produce your current state of being.  The polarity and energy of my hands as they touch your body changes your energy field, especially due to my therapeutic intent, as well as yours.  My hands automatically intensify or inhibit the flow of energy in your system, as necessary – your own body doing triage, giving the energy to the areas most in need at the moment. (For a definition of the terms you may hear Dr. Metz and I use in conjunction with your session, or here on this website, please consult our FF Glossary of Terms).

It is not necessarily good for a person to release old patterns before he/she is ready to do so and has the proper energy and resources to deal with the results.  For old trauma to be released, it is up to our own body’s innate intelligence to determine when, if, and how this will happen.  Dr. Metz and I just help point things in the right direction.  These treatments reestablish your normal energy pattern so that you can better resonate and draw energy from universal sources – food, other people, nature, etc.  When we are compromised, we lose our normal energy pattern; all we get is static.  This work helps one to get back in tune, reorganizing the system to a more efficient state, so energy can be drawn in and function at optimal levels. I do this using the protocols of my mentor, Dr. Metz, and his Fundamental Field® Therapy (which includes cranial-facial-sacral points, acupuncture/jin shin meridian points on hands and feet, and the ayurveda/polarity therapy chakra system at your midline and associated reflex areas (and traits).

Rather than manipulating the tissues, my emphasis is on manipulating the energy field, from which all else manifests (that’s why it’s called “Fundamental”).  Therefore, I may not directly contact your specific area of concern, but rather the areas to which I’m drawn, the reflex areas.  In doing so, I am supporting your entire system in its healing, including your specific area of concern.  There are many energetic pathways and corresponding reflex areas throughout the body, as well as complex interacting variables which are affecting your system.  Because of my training I am familiar with the most common pathways; I know how to address them, by utilizing Intuition and Energy Resonance Evaluation (Scanning) as my mode of evaluation, which is the way it is most effectively and efficiently accomplished. In this way, every time you come to me you get a treatment uniquely customized to your needs.

During a session you’ll recline clothed on the treatment table (or disrobe to the level of your comfort, with sheet covering).  Using my knowledge of the subtle energetic patterns of your body, with my hands and intuition as my guide, I determine when and where to apply various modes of gentle/firm touch, as needed:  holds, patting, tapping, tracing, traction, rocking, shaking, deep pressure and/or light massage.

As with water making its way through a hose, when debris is removed in one area the flow of water in the whole hose is affected.  The same is true of the energy in the body, it is connected, and the whole system is affected by the blocking and unblocking of a specific area.  I may need to shake, press, and squeeze to loosen the debris, or I may need to increase the pressure on one side of the clog in order to push it through. (Sore spots are points where many energy fields in your blocked pattern are converging and interacting). As a result, the energy begins to free-up, move and reorganize to where it’s needed most.

You may feel heat or cold, experience wave-like sensations, sigh deeply, become very relaxed.  You may become uncomfortable at times as you release old and familiar aches and pains, or have other types of common releases (i.e., hiccups, murmuring, yawning, itching, twitching, tingling…).  Certain impressions may also release into your consciousness:  thoughts, emotions, memories, colors or other imagery.  You may feel absolutely nothing taking place, or you may have a profound experience.  I generally stay quiet so that I can listen to your body directing me, but you are free to express yourself however you need to, or not at all.  Each time is different for each person.

After a session, you may continue to feel inexplicable shifts in your emotional, mental or physical states, in the days or weeks following your visit.  You may feel instantly better, or you may feel worse for a day or two.  If worse, though it can be unsettling, this too is a vital part of the holistic healing process. Unresolved traumas and deeply held adaptive patterns, coupled with the ups and downs of daily living, are often what create depletion or excess in our system.  These distortions affect us, right down to a cellular level, and prevent the free flow of life-sustaining energy, causing imbalance, distress and ill-health.

When old patterns are brought to the surface and allowed to release, a new standard of well-being can emerge.  There are often many layers to peel away.  Don’t worry; your body’s innate intelligence will direct the pacing, timing, and avenues of release and growth that are just right for you.  Have faith and trust the process, even if it gets difficult.  Transitions such as these originate on a higher, subtle energetic level, and may take some time to reach conscious, physical awareness or understanding, but in the meantime progress IS being made.  From personal experience, I feel that it does help to have a good support system; namely and foremost, some sort of spiritual belief and/or ‘grounding’ practice to hold onto, especially when your healing presents challenges, such as doubts, frustration and fear that things won’t improve.

Having treatments over time, with renewed perspective, a sense of clarity and an improved ability to deal with past and present life issues evolves.  Healthier boundaries can then begin to form — accepting responsibility for our own feelings, thoughts, behaviors and actions, and letting others do the same for themselves; forgiving and letting go; valuing, embracing and expressing ourselves more fully.  By connecting to, integrating with, and reflecting on all the many facets of one’s self, we can learn to better hear, appreciate, respect and rely on our own intuitive inner voice – if we take the time in silence to LISTEN and to TRUST.  This is a dynamic, life-long process.

My goal as a practitioner is to provide a comfortable and safe environment for you, to remain present and attentive.  In my treatment room, the environment I create for myself and my clients – emotionally, physically and aesthetically – is very important to me.  For instance, treatment time is usually quiet-time, and I only use a water fountain and recordings of nature sounds.  I feel it is most soothing and not as emotionally provocative or stimulating as music. If I use any products they are unscented. I, as well as several of my clients are sensitive to fragrances, so please help us in that regard if you do come in for a visit.

Your Chakras and You. (It’s not so spooky).

The Five Elemental Chakras of Polarity Therapy ~ The Negative Pole of the Fundamental Field

It has long been held by many ancient traditions of the world that universal Life-Energy comes from a spiritual source which pervades all creation. This spiritual energy enters and exits the body through the forehead at what is referred to as the “third eye”. It then flows outward and downward into the body, in prescribed pathways, giving it animation. According to Dr. Richard Metz, the pattern which arranges this subtle Life-Energy, organizing matter into the forms and functions of life, is called the “Fundamental Field® (of Advanced Energy Medicine)”This Field has three major Poles:  Positive, Neutral, and Negative. The Fundamental Field of Life-Energy encompasses the entire mind/emotions (both conscious and unconscious), body and spirit of each individual. What is known as Polarity Therapy (developed in the 1950’s by Dr. Randolph Stone) primarily addresses the energy flowing through the body, at its midline. This is considered by Dr. Metz to represent the Negative Pole of the Fundamental Field. All of the information here is based on Dr. Metz’ theory, which has taken Dr. Stone’s vision of Polarity Therapy to the next level.

At the Negative Pole of the Fundamental Field, the energy criss-crosses, creating the caduceus, which in turn houses five distinct Chakra Centers. These Chakra Centers are like large-scale electrons, each with a negative electrostatic charge, and as they spin they create the subtle magnetic fields of the body. In doing so, each Chakra gives rise to a different Element. Each Element then, is a manifestation of polarized subtle Life-Energy vibrating at different frequencies within the body, thus affecting it in different ways.

The Polarity Therapy Elements/Chakras are known as: Ether, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. (They are not the same as the Acupuncture Elements/Chakras: Metal, Fire, Wood, Earth, and Water. Those are part of the Neutral Pole of the Fundamental Field and have different functions/associations). The majority of energy blocks are here in the Negative Pole Chakras, the storehouse of mostly unconscious emotional energy that we’ve developed since conception. This unconscious energy is what drives our Conscious Mind, the Positive Pole, and helps to form the attitudes, beliefs, conflicts and stresses we experience as a result. Any issue (such as abuse, abandonment, need and/or enmeshment) with a person, place and/or thing, can affect any Chakra. We may feel discomfort in our body, mind, or emotions, but most of us aren’t in touch with how they are connected. If we were aware of the deeper causes and connections, we wouldn’t have the problem. The first step is to grasp our issues intellectually and to understand, at least conceptually. The rest will follow naturally as it should in due time, as determined by our system. How much bodywork a person needs usually correlates with how much psychological energy is tied up in the problem. Sometimes the bodywork is done first to get the energy moving in the right direction, and sometimes changes in lifestyle need to come first in order to change the energy. (That would be determined prior to, or upon your consultation/visit).

All five Elements exist within all five of the Chakras. Like a yummy layered cake, each piece of the cake has five levels within in it. So, in each Chakra piece we have a ‘layer’ of each of the five Elemental Levels of energy. Per Dr. Metz’ Fundamental Field Theory:

Ether represents the Level of Psychology.

Air is the Level of Motion.

Fire is the Level of Physiological Motivation.

Water is Level of Biochemistry.

Earth is the Level of Structure.

Every Element exists within every cell of our body (for more information on anatomy/physiology click here); however, the following are some of the predominant reflex associations/reflex areas for each Element:

Ether/#5 Throat Chakra: Communication, self-expression, self-worth, acceptance, acknowledgement, connection with spirit, identity, space, boundaries, time, travel, organization and ambiance. Grief. Pride and jealously. Humility. Expansiveness, openness, stillness, silence. The sense of hearing, the art of music and Feng Shui, the color blue, the gemstone Moonstone. Reflex areas: Neck, throat, mouth, teeth, ears, face, hair, skin, joints, thyroid, body cavities, the midline, thumbs and big toes. Auto-immune system, sensitivity, addiction and sleep disorders. Foods: Blue food, such as Blueberries, as well as uplifting (comfort) food, presented artfully, in a beautiful setting.

Air/#4 Heart Chakra: Love, affection, emotional and mental support, desires of the heart. Passing judgment. Sadness and disappointment. Envy. Compassion, charity and empathy. Movement, gentleness, lightness, quickness, mental acuity (being too “in your head” or “air-headed”). High-pitched, fast sounds, the sense of touch, the art of dance, the color green, the gemstone Emerald. Slender-build/wiry body types. (Gemini/Libra/Aquarius natures). Reflex areas: Tops of shoulders, thymus, mid-back, kidneys, calves, ankles, index fingers and toes. Nervous, respiratory, circulatory and immune systems. Foods: Green food and food that grows 6 feet or more above ground (fruits, seeds, nuts), sour tastes.

Fire/#3 Solar Plexus Chakra: Personal power, control, authority, will. Vitality and enthusiasm. Transformations. Anger, rage, frustration and resentment. Overwork and physical exertion. Forgiveness. Expansiveness, brightness, warmth. Loud and staccato sounds, the sense of sight, the art of painting, the color yellow, the gemstone Coral. Medium-build, muscular/athletic body types. (Aries/Leo/Sagittarius natures). Reflex areas: Forehead, eyes, solar plexus, liver, pancreas, umbilicus, thighs, middle fingers and toes. Metabolism and digestive system (absorption). Stress response (head – Conscious Mind). Foods: Yellow foods or foods growing 2-6 feet above the ground (grains, legumes, seeds), bitter tastes.

Water/#2 Sacral Chakra: Bonding, physical nurturing, home-life/family, being parented and parenting. Attachment and letting go. Lust and gluttony. Creativity, sexuality, sensuality, emotional acuity. Fluidity, flowing, smoothness. Smooth and slow sounds, the sense of taste, the art of cuisine and cooking, the color orange, the gemstone Pearl. Rounded/overweight body types. (Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces natures). Reflex areas: Breasts, chest, shoulder blades, pelvic and sacral areas, bladder, feet, secretory glands, ring fingers and toes. Reproductive, immune and lymphatic systems. Foods: Growing from ground-level to 2 feet (leafy vegetables, melons, cucumber, squash, orange foods), salty tastes.

Earth/#1 Root Chakra: Basic survival (material needs: career, money, food, clothing, shelter, possessions). Fear and greed. Insecurity and worry. Courage and generosity. Slow, steady, secure, grounded, structured, crystallized. Deep, droning sounds, the sense of smell, the art of aromatherapy and sculpture, the color red, the gemstone Ruby. Thick neck, large-build, strong body types. (Taurus/Virgo/Capricorn natures). Reflex areas: Neck, adrenals, coccyx, knees, pinky fingers and toes. Digestive (elimination) and bones/skeletal systems. Stress response (adrenal). Foods: Growing below the ground (tubers and root vegetables), sweet tastes.

So as you can see, even though we categorize things so that we can understand them better, that does not mean they are independent from one another. We often try to break complex things down into parts, but in reality every one and every thing is intra- and inter-connected, as well as intra- and inter-dependent, including our own selves!!
