The Wounded Healer

Adding this video now was inspired by my last post, and the responses that were made by my wise and experienced friends. It reminded me of something I heard long ago about Chiron, The Wounded Healer, and how I related to it even back then, long before I got into this line of work.

At the end of this post is a beautiful video, with a soundtrack by one of my favorite singers, Loreena McKennitt. It explains so well how I feel, with the exception that I don’t call myself, nor am I comfortable with any one else calling me, a healer.  I consider myself a facilitator, helping to direct the universal energy to where I detect that it’s needed most, for the greater healing good of my client. The client’s own Innate Intelligence takes over from there. God is the only healer. And with God’s help, the only one any one can heal is their own self. As much as we want to, we can’t willingly change/fix others, or do their healing work for them, it is up to each one of us to take on our own path of healing, with God’s grace and the support of friends, family, therapists, etc…Being able to see through to someone’s hurt and pain, and not being able to take it away for them, brings on feelings of guilt, frustration and powerlessness…but we must meet people where they’re at, support and encourage them the best we can, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to do anyone’s healing for them. Ultimately, our primary responsibility is to investigate and heal our own selves to the point where we can re-connect to our own honest, true, and authentic whole self: mind, body, spirit and soul. It is only then that we will have the resources that we need to serve others without undue compromise to them, or ourselves, in the process (i.e., codependency, transference, projection, etc.).

I also want to say here, that even though doing this work is very healing for me as well as my clients, I am very careful about maintaining healthy boundaries.  Dr. Stone, founder of Polarity Therapy always said, “Give a session, get a session,” and he was right!  Sessions are sacred space, and I always pray for Divine protection and guidance, “Keeping what’s mine mine, and their’s theirs” exchanging energies that are only appropriate, beneficial and necessary… Then, I leave the rest up to intuition and the Big Kahuna. 🙂  I couldn’t even do the work I do now, with out having gone down into by own healing abyss, and risen from the ashes, without my spiritual beliefs and the help of Dr. Metz. I do still struggle, the healing path is a life-long journey that even with the bumps, gets better and better. It’s like birthing a baby, once it starts to make its transition out in the world, you can’t just push it back in, ignore it, and go on with your life, or major and dramatic problems will certainly ensue. And once it’s out, it is constantly growing and changing.

As it says in the video, spirituality and healing is directly related to art of the heart.  I can say for me, engaging in Energetic Bodywork really IS an art form. I’m constantly amazed at how it requires me to be open to the unexpected and really improv and ad-lib. Energy is that way; it doesn’t like to be pinned down.  I bet any musician, writer, sculptor, painter, etc., would say the same thing. Once one enter that creative space, and gets the self out of the way, the energy starts to take on a life of its own, with beautiful flowing grace you become a channel of creativity…literally and figuratively. You say you can’t do that? Well when the time is right, you will relax, let yourself go, and dive into the zone baby!

We are divine creatures after all, under all the dross, and art from the heart lets our light shine through!  Keep in mind though that exposing the light, means exposing the dross in the process, so don’t get me wrong…the art isn’t always going to be sunshine and butterfly beautiful, it will probably be downright putrid at times, but the process of transformation is a profound blessing, in all it’s up and down glory. God and his Universe is the Creator, the Knower and the Doer, with each one of us, and our best spiritual (not necessarily worldly) interests, as part of the Divine Plan. That’s what I firmly believe to be true.

    Really poignant video…our tears are the salve for others’ wounds. Compassion and empathy grow in the the soils of experience. (Maybe the spoils as well!) Hold fast, gentle soul.
