What Polarity Therapy Means To Me
By Maggie Begley

Once initiated into the realms of Polarity Therapy, it becomes a way of life, a way of viewing the world. It is all about the energy. It permeates all that is within and around us: in our mind, emotions and physical body, in our relationships, in nature, food, music and art, in all of our interactions… It is the energetic, dynamic tension of polarized opposites which creates and sustains our universe. The five elements are merely manifestations of this energy, vibrating at different frequencies. It is especially fun, interesting and enlightening when trying to apply these polarity principles to everyday life. It is multi-sensory. It is about seeing, hearing, feeling, even tasting and smelling, the energy. It is about recognizing it, hopefully understanding it, resonating with it, possibly retracting from it or merging with it, at times manipulating it… It is always there in some way, shape or form.

Polarity Therapy is indeed wide in its scope. It is based on scientific principles and standardized protocols, yet greatly utilizes each practitioner’s special brand of creativity and intuition. Sessions are tailored to the individual and the situation in that point in time, and therefore, even though there are common themes, each treatment is unique. This keeps the work fresh and alive. And, although the focus always remains on the client, sessions often present a learning and healing experience, in some way, for both the giver and receiver. It can be mutually beneficial for both participants.

What I value most about Polarity Therapy is that it accentuates the fact our clients are really their own best guides. It our job as practitioners to educate and to assist them in assuming personal responsibility, while providing a safe and nurturing environment for this to naturally occur. When given the tools and the support to help them look within and go through their process, over time, with practice and growth, they will build trust in their own intuition. In addition to receiving bodywork, any opportunity we can give our clients to actively participate in their healing will also give them a feeling of empowerment, such as promoting diet, exercise, and verbal communication.

It is important to note, however, that the healing process is not dependent upon a conscious effort to understand it, or upon conceptualization or verbalization of the traumas that are seeking release. The movement of energy will eventually create some form of conscious awareness that will bring the healing to a new level. Such issues cannot be forced, as the body’s energy has its own sense of what is the appropriate pacing and timing. It is innately intelligent and knows what is best. This, I think, is a wonderful element of Polarity Therapy — that the bodywork is effective in and of itself.

I particularly appreciate that Polarity Therapy gives modern insight into the ancient practice of the laying-on-of-hands with an intention to heal. It is an age-old tradition, so I really feel part of something bigger. As a Polarity Practitioner I believe that I am merely a conduit for the transference of healing energy from a higher God-source. Therefore, I don’t see myself as a healer, but as a facilitator. My challenge is to be a facilitator who is able to maintain strong boundaries while approaching the work with a commitment towards love, compassion and the highest of intentions. From this point of view, practicing Polarity Therapy gives me the chance to perform “right livelihood”; to earn income while doing something I believe in. It aids in my personal growth and helps others to do the same. What could be better? That is a true gift.

My application was accepted, and I have been a member ever since:  http://polaritytherapy.org/

A Life in the Day (Sonoma Coasting)

Yesterday was a quintessential day on the Sonoma County coast: no wind, no fog, perfect temp in the upper 70’s.

I feel so lucky to have been born in this little part of our big world. I know others have not been as lucky, and that does make it bittersweet. I know that so much pain and devastation is going on everywhere, including in our beloved oceans.

I don’t have blinders on. I am not in denial. I do the best I can to stay informed and be conscious of how the choices I make affect others and the planet. One of those choices includes focusing my energy on what is Good and Positive. What we give our energy to flourishes.

This earthly plane will never be “heaven”, nor will it ever be “perfect”. But that doesn’t give us license to give up.

I choose Beauty, Love and Joy! Ripples can turn into waves…I hope the wave of inner joy I’m experiencing ripples out and the gentle wave soon reaches your shores.

Feeling Bugged?

Recently Dr. Metz has noticed what might be some kind of morphing-type bacterial infection going around, manifesting systemically (lymph, yeast etc.), hitting our patients hard. These days often when we’re fighting something in our system, we feel increasingly tired/low-energy & our “weakest links” become effected & exacerbated (from structure, to biochemistry, to psychology), as our body tries to “pull energy” from all its Poles & Meridian resources to deal with the infection. So for example, an old knee injury may flare up, or tooth troubles, cancer recurrences, arthritis aches, low back pain, feeling more emotionally unstable, reactionary or overwhelmed…It can affect us all over, though we may not initially connect it to this masked invader.

Dr. Metz has noticed his practice changing over the years, with people’s immune system’s being challenged chronically, more than ever before. This is probably due to increased stress, the onslaught of constantly morphing “bugs”, the global travel/economy & environmental factors. He spends more time than ever before managing these problems & less time being able to focus on getting to the “heart of the matter”.

That’s where I come in. With my extended treatments, I can help support both Dr. Metz & his patients, not only in dealing with acute problems, but helping them to address the deeper issues which made them vulnerable in the first place.

Go Team!!! 🙂

Life in the Shadows: Past and Present

I feel lucky to have so many inspiring, creative, intelligent, articulate friends.

This little gem is brought to you by my friend and former co-worker, Michael Newland, an Archaeologist at Sonoma State University. (See my Blogroll for the link to the Anthropological Studies Center where he works).

Mike packed a lot of valuable information and insight into this 2:11 minute personal anecdote, in addition to a whole lotta heart. I love my “peeps”.

Have a listen to “Mementos and Memory”; it’s well worth your time :).

Michael Jackson: A Man Who Was Committed To His Art

Michael Jackson
(8/29/58 – 6/25/09).
Remember The Time…
(Image via Google)

“My purpose? To give in the best way I can through song, dance and music. I’m committed to my art. I believe that all art has as its ultimate goal, the union between the material and spiritual, the human and the divine. I believe that to be the very reason for the existence of art. I feel like I was chosen as an instrument to give music, love, and harmony to the world. I feel blessed and honored to be able to be an instrument of nature that was chosen to give that.” ~ Michael Jackson, Oprah Television Interview, 1993

The above (almost a direct quote, but paraphrased by me) is how Michael responded to Oprah when she asked him what he thought his life’s purpose was and what it felt like to “be him”. This next clip contains imagery of Michael with his voice, in snippets, talking about what art personally, and in general, means to him:

He was very shy and humble in how he said it, and I thought his response was right on (since that is the exact way I feel about art 🙂 ). I have always been a big fan of MJ. Such artistry, as evidenced throughout history, is often rife with pain, drama and loneliness. Many artists have to struggle with making a living and gaining notoriety. Michael had that part in the bag (fully sequined of course 🙂 ).

He was a Virgo, a self-professed perfectionist who was never quite pleased with anything he did, nor with the way he looked. He even was upset that he “could’ve done better” when he first debuted his Moonwalk on Motown’s 25th Anniversary show – “could have stayed on my toes longer”, he said. The rest of us were so mesmerized we didn’t notice. But the doer, and self-reviewer, always does.

“What is once done well is done forever.” ~ Henry David Thoreau

I think you did just fine, Michael. Well, and forever.

He obviously had an unusual and difficult childhood, the effects of which, like most of us, showed up well into his adulthood and beyond. As for the allegations of abuse that he was said to have perpetrated, he was found innocent, but a toll was taken. The implications and ramifications of such charges were dire for everyone involved. People often act-out as a reaction to hurt from past experience, no matter who appears to be at fault, innocent or guilty, it happens all the way around. Situations like these can get complicated fast.

Whatever actually did or didn’t happen, it’s a shame, because Michael did give the world so much through his artistry. I, for one, get in a joyful mood whenever I hear his music. No one I’d rather dance to than MJ. (He produced his Thriller video and album the year I graduated High School, need I say more?). He gave a lot of thought to the visual impact, as well as the story, the lyrics, the voice & movement. He took it all very seriously AND had FUN with it. It was the full package of little details that came together to make it a full-bodied experience. There are a few artists that have, do and will, operate in this ‘performance style’ kind of way. I thoroughly notice and enjoy every bit of it. MJ is still King in my eyes.

“The glove was just – I thought one was cooler than two. I love to accent movement. The eye goes to where the white is – you know, the glove. And the feet, if you’re dancing, you can put an exclamation point on your movement if it has a bit of light on it. So I wore the white socks. And for the design of the jacket, I would sit with the people who made the clothes and tell them where I wanted a button or a buckle or a design.” ~ Michael Jackson

In addition to his study and knowledge of the history of art, dance and fashion, as was his goal, he did the rest of us a service by helping to break down social barriers with his music. And, by donating SO much of his time and money to a variety of charitable causes. Most importantly, as his little daughter Paris showed us, (with her tearful tribute to him at his memorial service, flanked by her two brothers), Michael was a most devoted and beloved father. As we all know, if we are parents and we wish to excel at anything, the greatest thing we can do is to succeed at that, especially if our time is short.

A life cut short is always a possibility, on both sides of the spectrum, though it’s something we rather not think about. Being mindful and pausing to give time and attention, doing the “little things” with our children, can enrich your life and theirs. If time is indeed cut short, you will have no regrets and you will leave them a mutually reciprocal legacy, a foundation of feeling loved and valued. That’s how we “make the world a better place,  for you, & for me, & the entire human race…”.

Now pause, turn on some tunes, and get to grooving’ and memory makin’!

Important New CPR Technique

This is a new and improved version of traditional CPR. It looks much easier to do and could help you save a life. It doesn’t involve having to alternate breathing with compressions; you don’t need to be certified to do it in an emergency situation; and, apparently the “Good Samaritan” law will keep you from liability should you accidentally inflict a broken rib in the process.

Save a Life with the New CPR

I’m sure the person in question will be happy to be alive, in spite of any rib-abuse by-product, should one occur :-).

Imagine Inspiration (Guatemalan Art Project)

The link and message below were recently emailed to me by my good friend Sunshine Psota (The Teddy-Bear-Knitter of a past post titled “Mother Bear Project, A Sweet Tale). This story appeals to me because it’s about women, children, art, culture, sustainability, helping others… AND it is a testament to the fact that it DOES only take ONE person to make a difference (in this case, she’s named Mira Talbott-Pope). Imagine what MANY could do, still do, can do, and will do. IMAGINE INSPIRATION and it will come!

Light the Fire of Your Bright Idea
(Image via Google)

“Dear Friends,

At times I get really inspired by what others are doing with their life and what they are doing for others. How so you say? Well one of Dave’s friends from high school has an animal rescue center in New Cannan CT called, “Strays & Others”.

Recently I heard about my friend Suzanne Stewart’s sister Mira. She had been a school teacher from the Chico area, and for the last 25 years an MFT counselor, who then moved to Guatemala.

Living somewhere between the usual standards for white foreigners and the locals in village, Mira has made friends with many people there and has started a project that appeals to the artist in all of us.

The little village she lives in is known for its paintings. To continue the traditions amongst the poorest of the village she has helped to set up classes and make the materials available to identify and continue the next generation of talented painters who can continue to live in the village because of the “money” from the paintings. I love the concept of allowing these kids more education, while their paintings help to feed their families. The alternative would be for them to leave school and work hard manual labor at a young age.

Just a little creativity on Mira’s part is spreading in wonderful ways. I have attached a link to her efforts, and the project she is affiliated with, to inspire you in whatever ways it does. As for me I am trying to find more time to charity knit because I have not been able to volunteer at the local hospice store lately.

Here is to lighting sparks within each of us,

Sunshine”

Urbane Art, Knitters on the Move

Image via Google

Everything old is new again. That is the nature of art, is it not? Creative Energy is always growing, stretching and morphing with the times, like the culture within which it is woven.

Artists are here to needle us common folk, to take us aback, to make us literally and figuratively, look again. Artists help counteract our rut, the mundane part of our lives that can become robotic. With insightful commentary on sociopolitical seriousness, under cover of fun and whimsy, and when warranted, down right rancor and biting sarcasm, they are here to protect us and liberate us from banality.

It sounds grandiose, but the simpler the better sometimes. All that is needed is to catch the masses off guard provoking wonder, reflection, emotion, laughter, reminiscence. We may not necessarily agree or appreciate everything that “they dare put out there” for us all to see. Though sometimes troubled, undervalued and misunderstood, those who participate in their artistry are brave in their vulnerability, some bolstered by their own ego and sometimes not, nevertheless making them worthy of society’s honor. I think their contributions enrich all of our daily lives, externally and internally and I couldn’t do without them. I say, “May God Bless the Urbane Artistes!”

Take the relatively new phenomenon of yarn bombing, for instance. It started in Europe when individuals with common proclivities began fussing about in a very peculiar way — tagging the town with their giggle-provoking-graffiti-softwear! Most would find what they do a very uplifting addition to city-life. Uh…but not everyone. Like all other types of graffiti, this too is considered illegal, even though it is removable and usable. Lol. Imagine that? Must make it an even more enticing challenge to such ‘rebels’ as these urban knitters. (I certainly appreciate your exuberance, just please, don’t hurt yourselves trying to ascend and cover new heights!)

Yarn bombing has gone global as you’ll see in this Today Show video-clip.

Watch out they’re armed, and NO thing is safe! 🙂 Thank Goodness. We need some old-fashioned, refashioned, jocularity…

(And, those urban knitters even came to my town and caught ME by surprise! Well not totally, because I had already made this post in July 2010 so I was aware of them. They came out of the woodwork in Santa Rosa in November 2010. I was just going about my business, and lo and behold, I was so delighted to see the world, my town, come to me! All warm and cozy…I just had to update this post in celebration thereof. I have also updated the links above, which came along in 2011 and 2012. So I was a tiny bit ahead of the curve) 🙂

Dolphins are Cultural Animals Too

Creative Genius
(Image via Google)

Talk about learned and shared behavior
(a.k.a., culture):  The dolphins in this video are making an amazing cultural display right before our eyes, giving us a whole new perspective on the phrase, a school of dolphins! What intelligent, imaginative, creative, playful, graceful and social creatures they are. There is STILL SO MUCH that animals, and the natural world, can TEACH US.

The ability for we humans to speak with words doesn’t necessarily make us better, nor does it make us more evolved than other creatures. The fact that we CAN self-reflect does give us a definite edge towards spiritual advancement, but only when we use that skill to our ADVANTAGE. Having humility, compassion and reverence towards other sentient beings, can only help us to that end. (And if we could only learn to blow bubbles like that, and not just blow smoke :)).

As I Walk With Beauty: A Navajo Prayer

As I walk, as I walk, the Universe is walking with me.

In beauty it walks before me.

In beauty it walks behind me.

In beauty it walks below me.

In beauty it walks above me.

Mother Bear Project, A Sweet Tale.

AIDS Orphans In Namibia With Their Bears!
(Photo by the Mother Bear Project)

As my friend Sunshine Psota said to me, “the Mother Bear organization is so wonderful because it touches a lot of hearts and takes a simple gift and turns it into something magical.”

I am honored and proud to have a friend like Sunshine (so aptly named :)) who brings others in great need such joy with her creative gifts. When Sunshine first started showing me her baby bears, my heart warmed. Then she showed me the above photo and my heart caught fire and melted into a puddle! These little orphaned Namibian AIDs survivors are happily embracing love incarnate…hand-knitted bears made by strangers they don’t even know, but the love woven in is palpable.

To see a photo gallery of the knitters and the baby bears in their new homes go to: http://www.motherbearproject.org.

To see a photo that Sunshine took of her sister Diane with her bears, check this out: http://www.motherbearproject.org/Newsletter/newsletter_December_2009.html

(Oh this makes me want to take up knitting. 🙂 I tried once and couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. My blankets always became triangles).

Over 50,000 bears have been distributed!

If you are interested in getting involved, or know someone who would be, contact the Mother Bear Project for a knitting pattern and other details. (When you’re finished knitting, if you are in Sonoma County, CA, like we are, the local drop-off spot is at Cast Away in Old Railroad Square in Santa Rosa). It’s that easy!

Yo! SASSIE! Dat You?

SASSIE Sets Sail ~ Painting by Maggie Begley

Are you SASSIE?  I am.  In other words, are you an individual who considers themselves to be:

Sensitive
Artistic
Spiritual
Seeking
Integration
Enthusiastically?

If you are such an individual, then we may just be kindred spirits, and this just may be your kinda place (even if you’re only a partial SASSIE :)). And/or, if you don’t resonate with that first bit, maybe you consider yourself to be more of a:

As the SASSIE Churns ~ Painting by Maggie Begley

Spry
Agnostic
Somber
Skeptical
Intrepid
Empiricist?

…In other words, somewhat of a rebel?

If so, don’t rule out The Spirited Soul and I, yet. There are all kinds among us. Take this one out for a little test-drive first and see how we handle. (No contract, purchase or assembly required). We might be a good fit, as long as I don’t veer TOO far off course (though that’s exactly what a rebel SASSIE would do!).

This is my first challenge to you. I think that everyone can benefit from creating their own Personal Mission Statement about their focus in life. Here is the one I came up with for myself:

“To be a Spiritual Warrior who faces Life’s challenges, while maintaining her Balance, Integrity and Faithfulness, with Clarity, Strength, a strong sense of Intuition, Self-Love and Inner Peace; all the while giving Gratitude and Surrendering to God’s Merciful Plan for Me…That I may also be of Service to others, both personally and professionally, on their own unique Journeys.”

Even though I have this fabulous Mission Statement, the following is still something I need to repeat to myself, every now and then, so it too is a Mission Statement of sorts:

“Release my grasp; stretch myself; be open, patient and still. Let my troubles, my worries…my old unneeded ways of ‘being’, pass on through. Cradle what is left, gently, in the palm of my hand. Keep my balance strong and steady; don’t be afraid to hold the ’emptiness’.”

Relax the Grasp! (Photo by Maggie Begley)

Relax the Grasp!

My own sentiments remind me of a quote by Satchidananda that I came across in a newspaper last year, while on vacation (and when I took this photo). It has since become the primary perspective by which I live and work. I now see it manifesting around me ALL the time!:

“There is a Divine Plan behind everything, and if we allow ourselves to be used by that unseen Force many things can happen in a mysterious, miraculous way…”

Sometimes it’s best to allow things to slip through our grasp, while we prepare, and wait patiently, for something new to come rest in its place. My daily prayer is one of discernment, asking for guidance about what to hold on to, what to release, when, and how.  Happy Sailing to you! 🙂 And even Happier Landings!

Dancing With God, & My Mother

“When I meditated on the word GUIDANCE, I kept seeing ‘dance’ at the end of the word.

I remember reading that doing God’s will is a lot like dancing. When two people try to lead, nothing feels right. The movement doesn’t flow with the music and everything in quite uncomfortable and jerky.  When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead, both bodies begin to flow with the music.

One gives gentle clues, perhaps with a nudge to the back or by pressing lightly in one direction or another. It’s as if two become one body, moving beautifully. The dance takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person and gentle guidance and skill from the other.

My eyes drew back to the word GUIDANCE.

When I saw ‘G’ I thought of God, followed by ‘u’ and ‘I’ ‘dance.’ God, you and I dance.

As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get guidance about my life. Once again, I became willing to let God lead.”

~ By Elaine L. Guercio ~

I first read this poem in 2005, just after getting divorced. How I always loved to dance, inherited that from my mom, my first teacher. I had always wanted to take ballroom dance classes with my husband, and wanted it to be ‘our thing’. I still like to go out dancing, and luckily my mom still does too. She and her partner are in their 80’s and nothing keeps them from the dance. It warms my heart to see them gliding seamlessly across the dance floor.

This poem spoke to me in a deeper way as well, of course, about the listening, the trust and the surrender (to both one’s SELF and a Higher Power), that is required throughout our life’s journey.

This Guidance is always there to dance with us, to take the lead as we close our eyes, let go and soar, sail into a sea of light and sound…steering us clear of the major obstacles in our path…essentially ‘making the crooked places straight,’ as we let that lighthearted joy inside us bubble out.  And it does. Trust me.

But we are not perfect. Even when we trip over our own feet, fall off our shoes, choke on our spittle, and crash into the punch bowl 🙂 we just have to get back up and continue to boogie, baby!

Oh yeah, and don’t forget to hold on for DEAR LIFE.

My mom had this song on her list to be played at her funeral, though recently she’s been talking about not having one at all. In honor of her & engaging in life’s dance…Have a listen, while you sing & sway along:

One of Nature’s Great Artistes

I was watching a story on PBS’ Frontline last week about a 70-year-old painter named Mary Jo McConnell who travels to the remote rain forests of West Papua, New Guinea, to document the little decorative cubbies called “bowers”. Bowers are special structures created by a certain species of bird who has come to be known as the “Bower Bird”, a performance artist of sorts. (He can sing and dance too, all this to woo a mate).

Mary Jo pointed out that the bower opening always faces east and is always in a bright spot of the forest floor, so as to capture the best light for enhancing the collection of found objects. (The bird even knows the importance of lighting!!). It can take several years for a male to complete the thatched portion of its bower, but the stylings are continually reworked…daily, seasonally…until his goal is achieved, getting a female to enter.

Mary Jo described her fellow (bird) artists as each having their own unique style. (But of course they do!). She calls one of them “Andy Warhol” since he has an unusual penchant for collecting rubbish to adorn his rebel abode, in a “just so” kind of way. 🙂

She has a such a great deal of respect and admiration for these birds, and their human neighbors (all trying to cling to their natural way of life), that she couldn’t resist making the perilous journey to see them one more time, at least, and hopes for more.

The aesthetic leanings of this phenomenal bird blew my mind!! Who knew?? But then I’ve always felt that animals and children deserve a lot more credit than we give them, both artistically and spiritually.

The Divine Creator is the best artist by far…channeling through EACH and every ONE of US with such BEAUTIOUSNESS!!

Today’s “Note to Self” (Daily Default)

Being grateful does not mean being in denial, nor does it mean being a Pollyanna.  It is important to ACCEPT where we are at, wherever THAT is.

EVERYTHING that we feel is a valid part of who we are, in terms of how we have and do experience our world.  And, there is ALWAYS something to be thankful for.

Positivity and gratitude should at least be given EQUAL time.  I think it takes more ENERGY to worry than it does to be in gratitude. Unfortunately, worry just comes easier sometimes, that is until we are able to create a new habit, an ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE DEFAULT POSITION 🙂
