Mom and Me, Getting Older by the Minute

A couple months ago, after the funeral of a dear old family friend, I was inspired to finally get my mom on tape. She used to have so many stories. I never wrote them down thinking I’d never forget, though I encouraged her to do so, which she never did. Sadly, now her memory is really starting to fail, and mine isn’t as keen as it used to be either. So I encourage all you who read this to consider doing the same. But in this age of technology, most of you probably already have.

I was going to keep this video private, as it’s probably only of interest to me, but I wanted to post it to honor my mom and the relationship we’ve had. (I’m so sorry the voices are not in sync with the video, I don’t know why that happens!) Like other mothers and daughters, I have had challenges with my mom, there’s certain things that were lacking, but I’ve always admired her independence, determination, perseverance, and know-how. She was the carpenter and repair person in the family, long before she lost her husband. And then she went on to raise me as a single parent, while mourning yet another loss in her life. Through it all, she has always been quick to laughter, the first person that would welcome you at a social event, and always loved to sing and partner dance. She met her beau Paul when they were in their late seventies, and they’ve been “keeping company” ever since. It’s never too late to find love!

Most of all, I so appreciate her open-mindedness and complete fearlessness, for herself, and later when it came to me. She never tried to talk me out of anything, even when I went travelling abroad for five months, leaving her lonely, or when I started exploring other religions and ideas, which may have conflicted with her Christian upbringing. Spirituality and travelling were loves of hers too.

So Mom, I make this post for you, in honor of Mother’s Day. I know that even though it’s not something you dwell on, I also know it’s hard for you to come to terms with losing control, feeling like your “slipping away” and coming to the end portion of your life. It’s hard for me too. But we’ll keep our sense of humor, together.

Today’s “Note to Self” (Lessons)

Life is all about timing, learning the perfect lessons at the perfect time…perfectly tailored just for you.

You might suffer “repetitive stress” injuries along the way, but you will get stronger, and the task will eventually be completed. In my experience, the lessons will continue to present themselves in various ways, until we finally “get it” and have developed enough resources and experience to finally address and resolve the deeper, underlying wounds that caused the “problem(s)” in the first place.  At that point, we are no longer victims…we are Victorious!

In this vein, I am offering up these words of encouragement for all of us Soulful Warriors who struggle: Hang in there.  Pay Attention.  Do the best you can from where you’re presently at, with the resources you currently have.  Set the intention for “Highest Good”…And then keep the Faith. Have Courage.  Allow yourself to FEEL your emotions, gently without judgement or shame.  Remember each personal experience is valid.  Love yourself.  Be Patient and Trust the Process….What a tall order that is, if I do say so myself.  However, I continue to have confidence each of us CAN, and WILL, deliver these gifts to ourselves, in due time.

Keep in mind that genuinely nurturing oneself is certainly not a “fast food” situation, with a quick and easy solution, done while multi-tasking. We all know that “slow food” that is made with the best quality ingredients, prepared with loving intention and is consumed attentively, is ultimately more nutritious and satisfying in the long run…Let’s hear it for the mindful mono-taskers!!  We are talking true “Soul Food” here people!

Now go fill yourself up, start digesting…and you will naturally eliminate what you no longer need, when Nature calls and not before. Remember it’s all about timing?  Your Energetic System has its own unique, innate intelligence.  You can’t force the process. You shouldn’t try to release before you’re ready, or you might suffer the consequences.  Sometimes we are our own biggest obstacle (talk about a pain in the butt!).  Not to worry though, enough of the right input will eventually produce the right output…I love a good food analogy and I think I’ve milked this one for all it’s worth. 🙂

I’ll leave you now with this final little morsel: My friend’s elderly mother once asked, “What does that bumper sticker mean – ‘Shit Happiness’?” 🙂 I think that sums it up nicely.  Of course the saying is “Shit Happens” but I like her perspective even better.

The Body is an Important Part of Mind-Body Medicine (Get Checked Out!)

Part of Mind-Body Medicine is BODY!  They are interdependent and it’s helpful to get all the information you can about yourself. In Energy Medicine, we often think of psychology effecting physiology, but the reverse is also true. The following are five important physical check-ups that you should get, per Dr. Oz, as stated when he appeared on The Oprah Show, 1/12/11.

This is part of  the basic monitoring of your body, so that you can know what’s going on and keep yourself functioning optimally:

1). Blood Pressure = 115/75 is best 110/70 is even better, as long as you’re not experiencing dizziness or light-headedness. This is to protect your heart and circulatory system. You can by a gauge of your own and/or many drugstores offer this service.

2). Waist Size = Your waist size should be one half your height. So I am 5′ 6″ (66″), therefore my waist should be no more than 33″. Having extra weight around the middle makes it hard on your internal organs, the 2 kidneys mostly. The kidneys are part of our waste-filtering system. Measure yourself once a month.

3). Weight = Find a weight that’s appropriate for you, then weigh yourself weekly on the same scale, same time of day, in the same clothing. Catching weight gain or loss earlier rather than later is an important clue to your health, making so you can more quickly remedy a situation if there is a problem. Check out this chart to find out your “ideal” weight based on your height: www.healthchecksystems.com

4). Cholesterol = HDL (“the happy kind”) should be 50 or above, the higher the better. LDL (“the lousy kind”) should be 100 or under. Get checked every 5 years.

5). Fasting Blood Sugar Test for Diabetes = Do 6-8 hours after a meal and the results should not be more than 100.

In addition, your resting heart-rate, taken first thing in the morning (at your wrist or neck), should be:
40-50 beats per second for athletes.
60’s for the rest of us.
83 and above is dangerous for everybody.

If fear or finances are the problem, then get yourself to the doctor at least once to get thoroughly checked out. This enables you to have a baseline from which to work and compare in the future. I recommend recording your findings in a labeled notebook. Keeping a notebook like this is also good for keeping track of your physical/psychological symptoms, as well as the life circumstances which may be affecting your health. Such a notebook can assist you with a quick and easy way to track your stats over time. This information will come in handy for both yourself, and any practitioner whose aid you may seek.

High Points of the Work Week

High Point #1: When a client who’s undergoing chemotherapy barely made it in to see me, suffering from fatigue and frightened by having feelings of no will to live…left after an hours session with a spark in her eye, saying, “I feel so different; I feel alive again!”

High Point #2: Feeling lucky and vindicated for our office being able to temporarily operate off the grid, without it affecting us or our clients. A passing truck pulled down the power lines to our office, leaving them “live” in the middle of the road, and no one was hurt. And since we do all our work by hand, even appointment-making and bookkeeping, the show went on!!  Of course Dr. Metz, action hero that he is, wanted to make his own repairs on the spot, telling the fireman, “I used to work for PG&E.” (Pacific Gas & Electric Company)Said the fireman, “Well do you now?” “No.” Well then, you’ll have to wait.” 🙂

Electrical power was restored by the end of the day; Divine Power was there all along.

It was a good week.

A View of Maggie, with a View

Today, I was messing around with the video-cam again and spontaneously decided to make my first video, of just myself, without my previous side-kicks. 🙂 Here it is, no edits, no frills.  I’m pleased enough with it and takin’ it just ‘as is’ (especially since I don’t know how to edit yet!).  It will also be posted on my YouTube channel linked on my menubar under YouTubin’, Maggie’s Picks @GentleBalancing, in case you want to see it again and/or share it from there.

My Life Has Been About Death

Like a true Irish daughter, I am drawn to obituary notices and visiting graveyards. Even on vacation, I am at home with morbid melancholy.

At last count (Feb. 2011), 53 people who I’ve known personally have died, 13 of whom were close family members. And that doesn’t even include the demise of 12 beloved pets that were like siblings to me. I had attended 14 funerals by the time I was 18, most significantly, my own father’s when I was 8. And I don’t even live in a war zone. I’m going to another such gathering this weekend, a celebration of a dear friend’s life, the matriarch of a family I have known since birth. Her husband was my Dad’s best friend. As more and more people leave that had known my Dad, and who were of “the Greatest Generation,” I feel an end of an era approaching.

  1. Death has helped shape my life. How could it not? Pain, grief and loss is something I understand well. Death is why I treasure life even more, and it’s how I know what’s really important, for me.
  2. Death is a dreaded wake-up call, necessary, though unpleasant to say the least. I am not a morning person, I am a mourning person, and sometimes I’d rather just stay in dreamland, asleep.
  3. But the biggest part of life is waking up to death. It is about coming to terms with that part of us, and everything, that is mortal and impermanent. It is about helping us to focus on what is immortal and permanent. That common denominator is Love. And I am grateful for it.

I know and respect that everyone’s path is different, but for me, a life wrought with death has caused me to seek answers. It has made me a person focused on finding what I feel is life’s true meaning, and purpose.

“Saints come into this world by the grace and mercy of the Lord. They do not come to make it a better place, nor to improve its lot, but to free us from our bonds of attachment, and turn our attention towards the Father. They come to make us blind to this world and give us the sight to see the Lord.” ~ Indian Mystic and Spiritual Teacher, Maharaj Charan Singh Ji (1916 -1990)

This strategy has worked on me :)… For in my case, I know, and believe it to be so…There is so much more than this finite level of existence. Our birth, and death, here is the start of a journey, not a destination. We just have to ‘go towards the Light’ in our quest for eternal brilliance. Sometimes we feel the electricity has gone out, leaving us to grope around in the darkness. With bumps and bruises, it can be a rocky road. But somehow, the good bits, the joy, the love, the glimpses of things to come, encourage us to continue doing our Home-work and press on.

Being a student in the School of Life, I fully appreciate all of the lessons and all of the teachers that bring me closer to graduation day. Though I’d really prefer to healthfully drag things out and graduate with the Class of 2065! 🙂

Today’s “Note to Self” (Be In, Not Of)

This leafy bouquet landed pristinely untouched, resting on the sludgy surface. Being in the world, but not of it, means landing softly and gently, not allowing the muck to pull me down with it, sullying my Spirit and Soul in the process.

In life we can’t control what happens to us, but we can influence outcomes by taking responsibility for the part we play. Our reaction is something we CAN control. Do I choose to make things worse, or better? What most of us need is more objectivity, and less reactivity. This requires forgiveness and compassion for ourselves and others, which comes from a place of balanced confidence. I need to remind myself of this today and everyday.
Being IN the world but not OF It, doesn’t mean projecting an image of perfection, or keeping up appearances at all costs. It’s about realizing, honoring and preserving my most authentic unique self, the part of me which is not OF this world, but happens to be IN it!  I still have to live life here, this requires not being afraid to risk floating in the muck till the next rains come along, bringing opportunity for refreshment and renewal…coasting me downstream, or sliding me up on a safe shore. If I find myself getting pulled under, I will hold my Breath and keep the Faith. I have no choice but to survive, and I will…eternal Divine Love is my ultimate Life Guard.

Today’s “Note to Self” (Mind’s Eye)

Remember, your mind chooses what it wants to perceive. Self-limiting beliefs are a cage of our own making. There is always an escape route close at hand, if we’re brave enough to see it, let alone take it.

There are also boundaries that are meant to keep us safe, if we trust ourselves, and are healthy enough, to want them, let alone build them. The best fences keep out the “bad” energies, while allowing the “good” to flow through.  Both perspectives are a necessary part of the healing, spiritual journey…boundaries down, boundaries up, then “no boundaries necessary no more!”, once we’ve reached Home.

To cover your bases while you’re journeying out and up, I say keep your options open as far as your perceptions are concerned! Make sure that one of the choices on your Daily Life Quiz is: “c.) All of the above.” Then pray for Clarity, Discernment, Courage and Trust, so that you can make the right choices for yourself.

Allow Me to Introduce You to Carl

I first wrote this essay, for myself, on April 4, 2009.  I had become fixated on Carl Jung, once again.  I think it was partly due to the dreams I was having at the time, and the fact that The Dream Book, by Betty Bethards, which I often consult, is based on Jungian psychology. He was a spiritual person who delved deeply into personality typing, and how our temperaments affect our dealings in the world. So for those of you who haven’t met Jung in your travels, allow me to introduce him to you.

According to Wikipedia.com:

Carl Jung (1875-1961) was a Swiss psychiatrist whose ideas helped shaped the field of psychology alongside his colleague and predecessor Sigmund Freud.  The two eventually parted ways, both theoretically and otherwise, after about 6 year’s time.  Jung is called the father of Analytical Psychology (now called Jungian Psychology).  Some of Jung’s major contributions were the notions of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, individuation (becoming a whole person through integration of the conscious and unconscious while maintaining autonomy) and synchronicity (things that would be unlikely to occur by chance, but that happen in a supposedly meaningful manner).   His ideas evolved as a result of a difficult childhood, an only child of a preacher and a mother who was “mentally unstable”.  And later, by his travels around the world and his fascination with Western, as well as Eastern, culture and spiritual philosophies.  Even back then, he cautioned “modern” people not to rely so heavily on science and logic, but to turn to their unconscious and the realm of spirit to gain inspiration and understanding.

I was also one of those people fascinated by Jung.  I first encountered him, without even knowing it, when I was encouraged to take the Myers-Briggs Personality Indicator as a pre-teen.  (Amazingly, I took the test recently, and not much has changed, except now I am considered an Intuitive, rather than a Sensate).  Ten years later I was introduced formally to Jung’s writings as I was studying to be a cultural anthropologist, and now as an older person and an Energy Practitioner, I am revisiting him again, especially in terms of “individuation” and “synchronicity.” Back then, for obvious reasons, the idea of a “collective unconscious,” replete with archetypes, resonated with me so much and I was hooked.

Here is a quote from the website on such:

“Archetypes are, according to Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, innate universal psychic dispositions that form the substrate from which the basic themes of human life emerge.  Being universal and innate, their influence can be detected in the form of myths, symbols, rituals, and instincts of human beings. Archetypes are components of the collective unconscious and serve to organize, direct, and inform human thought and behavior.  According to Jung, archetypes heavily influence the human life cycle, propelling a neurologically hardwired sequence which he called the stages of life.  Each stage is mediated through a new set of archetypal imperatives which seek fulfillment in action.  These may include being parented, initiation, courtship, marriage, and preparation for death”… “All the most powerful ideas in history go back to archetypes.  This is particularly true of religious ideas, but the central concepts of science, philosophy, and ethics, are no exception to this rule. In their present form they are variants of archetypal ideas created by consciously applying and adapting there ideals to reality.  For it is the function of consciousness not only to recognize and assimilate the actual world through the external gateway of the senses, but to translate into visible reality the world within us (Jung’s Collected Works 8, 342)”.

Jung’s ideas were deeply felt, and piqued the curiosity and following of many.  The influence of his legacy is widespread even today, in academia as well as popular culture.  Decades ago, Isabel Myers-Briggs (1897-1979) and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs were one such duo of interested followers, so much so that together, studying Jung’s ideas, they created what is called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test based on his teachings.

According to Skepdic.com:

“The [MBTI] is an instrument for measuring a person’s preferences using four basic scales of opposite polesVarious combinations of preferences result in 16 personality types, says the Consulting Psychologists’ Press, Inc. (CCP), which owns the rights to the instrument”.  According to the CCP, the MBTI is the “most widely used personality indicator in history”.  Two million people per year take the MBTI.  “Types are typically denoted by four letters…to represent one’s tendencies to the four scales.”  (i.e., ESTJ or INFP):

Extraversion vs. Introversion
Sensing vs. Intuition
Thinking vs. Feeling
Judging vs. Perceiving

According to HumanMetrics.com (a website which offers a Jungian Marriage Test called a “Match Index”):

[The Jung-Myers-Brigg’s classification] regards personality as an information system which is based on these criteria.  The classification interprets compatibility of partners as a match of their information systems by the [below] mentioned criteria which correlate with the MBTI:

Expression Index = the source & direction of information expression = (Sociable) vs. (Self-Sufficient)

Perception Index = the method of information perception = (Pragmatic) vs.(Idealistic)

Processing Index = the method of processing information = (Objective) vs.(Empathetic)

Implementation Index = the form of information implementation = (Scheduled) vs. (Improvisational)

According to Keirsey.com:

The Keirsey Temperament Sorter categorizes the Jungian archetypes into four Temperaments (with four types each):

Artisans (Composer / Crafter / Performer / Promoter)
Guardians (Inspector / Protector / Provider / Supervisor)
Idealists (Champion / Counselor / Teacher / Healer)
Rationals (Architect / Field marshal / Inventor / Mastermind)

So as you can see, Carl Jung’s influence is very far-reaching, and I am grateful to him for it.

Jung Revisited

I had never seen Carl Jung “in person” before this. Isn’t YouTube great?

As for God, Carl says he “KNOWS” God exists, he doesn’t just “BELIEVE” it is so.  I think that’s what all of us spiritual folk strive for.  A knowing. That’s why I so believe in the Mystic Tradition inherent in all Faiths.

Carl Jung is someone whom I have admired and resonated with for such a long time. Come to think of it, in spite of that, I don’t know if I have ever read one of his books! I just know he’s been on my radar, in one way or another, since I was a teenager. Recently I have been revisiting that relationship. I listened in on a Teleseminar given by Michael Conforti of the Assisi Institute last week.  Michael was speaking about The Red Book, a personal journal of Carl Jung’s which he started writing in about 1912.  Jung never anticipated that it would be released to the public, though it just recently has been, after careful consideration by his family.  The lecture by Michael was fascinating. He read various passages from the book and then elaborated from there. I was surprised, given my love for anthropology, that he was originally interested in being an archaeologist.  He was interested in the “wisdom traditions”, the “bedrock of archetypal symbols” and modern people with “antique souls”.  I also liked the concept he brought up of “Divine Madness” as being “smitten with Spirit”, and that it takes a special psyche to be able to endure the “darkness” and not run away. “Everything is dark before new life comes in.” There were so many things of interest that were said, I wish I had a better memory, or could at least read my notes!

http://www.assisiconferences.com/about/about_the_founder.html

Then today, as I was working on a client of mine, she shared with me how she had recently purchased The Red Book, that she had just found out about Jung a year ago or so, and had tried to read some of his books, but found them difficult. However, her experience with The Red Book has been phenomenal and she highly recommended it to me.  She said it is so intimate, and revealing, so personal, so affirming, filled with his art, and beautifully translated. It’s expensive, but worth the price she said. So maybe now is the time for me to take the next step in my Jungian journey. I think it just might be synchronicity. 🙂

Life-Energy: Earth & How It Relates To You (#1 of 5)

The Earth Element is the densest of the five elemental energies in the Negative Pole of the Fundamental Field. It is associated with the #1/Root Chakra at the base of the spine at the coccyx, low back, abdomen, adrenal glands (stress response), the neck, knees, pinky fingers and toes. Astrologically, it is associated with the Earth Signs of Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo natures. Earth Signs will be more vulnerable to Earth issues. Fundamental Field Theory/Therapy applies to animals as well. Your pets have their own problems, and like children, they are energetic sponges for what’s going on around them, in their caretakers’ lives.

The Root Chakra encompasses the issues of career, money, the basic necessities of life and survival. Any depleting activity in this chakra, be it emotional, mental or physical, will affect these areas in particular, as well as your entire system. For example, if you are worried about money, or your house, or your job, it may show up physically as low back pain. The physical can also affect the emotional, so if you are doing things that are stressing your low back, this might make you susceptible to feeling more vulnerable about finances. This is how the mind-body connection works.

Ways to keep Earth in balance is by tuning in to: the color red; slowing down, steadiness, structure, security and groundedness; low droning sounds (like listening to or making a drumbeat); your sense of smell; the art of aromatherapy, sculpture and gardening; weight-bearing exercise, such as rock-climbing; sweet tastes and eating foods that grow below the ground (roots and tubers, like potatoes, beets, carrots, onions, garlic, and jicama). The key is to not under-do or over-do anything.

On the Psychological Level the Earth Element is associated with fear, worry, insecurity, greed, courage and generosity; on the Level of Motion, the energy is contracted; on the Level of Physiological Motivation it is associated with digestion, elimination in particular; on the Level of Biochemistry it is associated with the blood, and issues of food, allergies, sickness or diseases (including cancer), that affect the Earth reflex areas; and on the Level of Structure it is associated with bones and joints.

If you have problems with any of these things, it could be due to blockages in these particular areas, or at any point in the system which reflexes to these areas. Dr. Metz/myself would determine that by using what Dr. Metz calls “Energy Resonance”, which is a felt sense, not necessarily a psychic or intuitive one. It’s like tuning a guitar to a pitch pipe, you can hear and feel the resonance, whether the two are in tune or not. Anyone can develop this skill with practice.

Similarly, we scan your system with a question in mind, and we can feel the resonant pull of energy when we’re in sync with the question. For instance, we could ask, “What is the energy in the system currently dealing with that is most urgent?” We might run the hand along the body, and feel a resonance when we get to the adrenal glands. That would pose another set of questions, such as: “Is this person stressed and by what? What is draining the energy there? Too much worry? Too much sugar? Too little rest?”

After information is gathered, through these means and discussion with the client, bodywork can then begin. There is another set of questions that helps direct the customized protocol, but intuition is now the best way to treat the energetic system, being that it is interconnected in ways that are complex and not linear. The client’s system takes in the energy being radiated by the polarity of the practitioner’s hands (like jumper cables to a battery). With the intention and attention of the practitioner towards “Highest Good”, the client’s own innate intelligence does triage and sends the energy to where it’s needed most.

Today’s “Note to Self” (MLK)

Today as I honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., what he did, and what he stood for, I will keep these quotes of his on my mind, as they apply to all levels of the healing journey. That journey begins with me and I must keep the Faith, and the Strength, it takes to endure. I’ll remember him and all the others who “fought the good fight”, with Love:

“As my sufferings mounted soon I realized that there were two ways in which I could respond to my situation – either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course.”

“All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem.”

“Everything we see is a shadow cast by that which we don’t see.”

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only Light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only Love can do that.”

Jane of the Jungle

(Photo of Jane Goodall courtesy of www.wikipedia.org).

A few nights ago I saw a hero of mine on television…Jane Goodall, British ethologist, anthropologist, conservationist and activist extraordinaire. The Gombe Research Centre, which she founded, is celebrating its 45th anniversary. When the interviewer asked Jane who her hero, her biggest influence, her biggest inspiration was, Jane replied that it was her own mother.

Even from a young age Jane felt nothing BUT encouragement. For instance, when she surprised her mother by bringing a handful of wriggling, writhing worms to bed, her mother handled it with such grace. Instead of panicking or scolding, she appealed to Jane’s interests and sensitivities by telling her that she must set the worms free or they would surely perish. So together they returned the visitors back to their home in the dark garden muck.

Jane continued her love affair with all creatures great and small into adulthood. She had a special fascination with various animals’ habits and relationships to one another, as well as to their human counterparts, and vice-versa, brought on by the stories of Dr. Doolittle and Tarzan that she had heard in childhood. She was always looking for connections, acknowledging the fact that every animal is a unique sentient being, with more going on internally than we give them credit for. Since that early time, she had been longing to visit the “Dark Continent” of Africa, as it was then called.

She said that hers was a big dream at the time…for a little child of the female persuasion. The only way a female could dare travel to or live in Africa, was to become a Missionary’s wife, and she wasn’t going to wait around for that! Remarkably, Jane never received a discouraging word from any member of her family. Instead she was constantly reassured that anything was possible, if she wanted something bad enough and was willing to work hard for it.

Through a series of “synchronous” circumstances, Jane’s dream did come true. She received her opportunity to work with the animals, with a slight caveat, and again it was her mother to the rescue. Jane was commissioned by anthropologist and paleontologist, Lewis Leakey, to study chimpanzees in the Gombe National Forest in Tanzania, East Africa, under his tutiledge. But at her tender age of 26, a chaperone was required to accompany her. So she and her mom ventured together into the jungle. They were issued one spare army tent, which also became host to a variety of large insects, scorpions and snakes, of which her mom was terrified. Nonetheless, her brave mom sat alone at base-camp all day while Jane was off observing chimpanzees. No wonder Jane picked her mother as her biggest hero and inspiration.

When the interviewer asked Jane what her life held for the next 50 years, she’s in her mid-70’s now, she said…”dying!” I’m paraphrasing, but what she said next went something like this: “I’m not going to live forever and the torch will have to be carried on by all of you. The younger generation has the commitment, the energy and enthusiasm. The elders have the wisdom. We must do this hand-in-hand.”

She also shared how angry she gets when people use the quote that, “We’ve not inherited the earth from our parents, we’ve borrowed it from our children.” She says that’s a lie, we’ve STOLEN it from our children and it’s up us to help make things right.” She would like to see her “Roots & Shoots” program, now in more than 100 countries, extend its reach even farther, especially in the Middle East.

Jane is one of the reasons I majored in anthropology, she and my Junior College anthro professor who encouraged me to select it as my major, and to go on to University. That professor, Dianne Smith, was an empowered woman and an excellent teacher, who greatly inspired me. I wanted to be like her, and I wanted to be like Jane in particular…unorthodox, brave and adventurous, with a sense of style, humor and spunk…studying primates in their natural habitats, be they Great Apes or Homo sapiens! Little do we realize the power we each have to influence one another, whether from near or far.

Also at the time I was attending the Junior College, I was introduced to new and interesting explorations on the home front. My boyfriend’s mother, Mary Ronchelli, had just given me my first cookbook. She too became a role model to me, especially for vegetarian cooking. (Jane is also a vegetarian :)). Mary knew everything about everything, from basmati rice to cilantro! When she eventually asked for MY advice on cooking, that was the biggest affirmation I could have ever received…My mentor asking little ole me for my little ole opinion?! (I must have impressed her with my first dinner party. I invited herself, her husband, my boyfriend, his little brother and my mom. Hmmm…that would be 6 people, too bad I only had enough food for 4. That was an FHB moment…Mom and I ate very little. I would never make that mistake again!!)

Jane’s remembrances of her mom reminded me of Mary, with her subtly engendering her encouragement, confidence and self-esteem building techniques along to me, the younger generation…These women have proven to me that such a thing is indeed an art form. It takes a village…I’m glad to have had these “elders” in my life to have helped me, and others like me, to find their way.

Epiphany

The Christmas Holiday season is officially over (yay!). Yesterday was the feast of the Epiphany, the 12th day of Christmas, when tradition holds that the three Magi came from afar, following the brightly lit star that led them to the Christ Child. They came to bear witness to Him, presenting their gifts.

As a child I loved all the stories, pageantry and ritual that came with this season, starting with Advent. I enjoyed opening the Advent Calendar each day, lighting the candle(s) each night, saving my coins to deposit in our food donation box, and my favorite…ceremoniously placing a piece of straw for every good deed I did that day, into the crib which would soon softly cradle our little Baby Jesus..the Grand Finale. Being Catholic, we didn’t take down our Nativity, our decorations, or did we “pack up” Christmas, until Epiphany came and went. I did manage to create some fond memories over the years, but this life, and this season in particular, has always been difficult for me.

Strangely, or not, my best Christmas was the one just after my Dad died. He had died the previous September, when I was eight and my older, independent siblings pretty much stayed scattered, permanently. I think I remained in shock for quite some time.  Luckily, my mother’s eldest brother and his wife generously offered to pay the airfare that would take Mom and I from mild California to the great Winter Wonderland of Nebraska. Back home it was mostly just Mom and myself, year round, holidays and all. But for this one, at last I was surrounded by lots of cousins and extended family, reminiscing, bonding, sledding, skating, snowman crafting, and a basement chock full of presents, fun, food, and playtime! That one childhood Christmas was glorious.

It was a nice diversion, but one NEVER gets over the loss of a loved one, especially a child for her parent. As an adult it’s hard enough to handle such a loss, but to a child, whose entire world is their parents, it is an unthinkable and devastating reality to face and adapt to. Back in the day, children were often treated as if they didn’t know what was going on, couldn’t understand anyway, and as time passed, would just “get over it”. Plus, adults often felt that they must “stay strong”, were scared of their own emotions, and uncomfortable with the topic of death. Fortunately, I’ve seen this changing a bit for the better over the years, in some circles anyway.

I’ve heard the phrase, “It’s never too late to have a happy childhood”, but I disagree. Once your innocence is lost, by whatever traumatic circumstance(s), and you haven’t yet developed the coping skills that come with the wisdom that age brings, you end up “stuffing” a vast amount of unexpressed, unconscious emotional energy that becomes disassociated out of necessity. You have no real choice but to go on, and “stuffing” is the best option at the time. But you can’t ignore it forever. Just because you don’t think about it or recognize it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or that it just vanished. We are many-layered beings, so even if we’re under the impression we’ve dealt with something, that might not be the case. It can resurface when triggered again by the present.

It’s important to realize that we must go back, not so that we can regain what was lost, but to finally mourn and accept what did occur…that things and/or people, didn’t turn out the way we wanted and/or needed them to. You must eventually accept that fact, not just intellectually, but viscerally, in every cell and fiber of your being. (Only those who’ve experienced this for themselves will know what I mean. My work as a patient, and practitioner, of Dr. Metz’ Energy Medicine has facilitated this process in ways I never thought possible; it is so COMPLETELY holistic in it’s approach).

On the flip side, when you are a youngster at least there is usually still a storehouse of adaptive energy to draw from. That’s what the adults see and say, “The kids are doing great; they’re so resilient.” But again, unfortunately, even this reserve can be tapped dry by unresolved trauma, adversely affecting health and well-being in some way, at some point, unless some proper nurturing, support and resources are/were consistently provided.

Even at that, we are ALL unique in our own valid experiences, what affected us and to what degree, as well as the rate and depth at which those things are addressed and healed. So we can’t compare one person to another in this regard, even if they come from the same family, or community. And even with people who seem to have had no external trauma in their lives, “the perfect upbringing”, dysfunctional Energy Patterns formed as early as conception can be silent and stealth perpetrators. So there’s really no room for anyone to harshly judge their own, or another’s, internal angst. Our personal responsibility consists of paying attention, investigating, understanding, forgiving, transforming, and be the best person we can be in the process. We can’t force the process, but we can set the intention, be courageous and patient. It all boils down to learning to have Love and Compassion for ourselves and others.

In that vein, this past holiday season was the first time I didn’t try to compensate for my feelings of lack. I barely “celebrated” at all. I finally faced the emotional facts, and really truly felt my pain from a very honest place. That is: I never had, or will have, a happy childhood that consisted of an INTACT, cohesive nuclear family, who shared/shares fun times, sorrows and traditions together, with any sort of inner heart-warming joy. (Thank goodness Mom and I had the Church and a group of family friends who “came to our rescue” during those early years.)

Later, when I was in High School, we began joining in with my Dad’s extended family, and every once in awhile a sibling joined in. And, when I got married at 28, I entered into a large Italian-Irish Catholic family, complete with grandparents and grandkids, who made homemade raviolis, went tree-hunting and did all those wonderful things I so craved to experience with my own family. Their’s was a huge gift to me.

Now that I’m divorced, my mom is 86, slowing up and counting down her final Christmases, I have no mate, no children or home of my own, and no money…Holidays are back to being emotionally challenging. As I said, I am in a healing process, so things feel kinda yucky now and I am acknowledging that so that I can move forward…Afterall, it’s never to late to have a happy adulthood!!!!! I am looking forward to what 2011 will bring; Life is such a mystery…you never know what you’re gonna get!

I am very positive in general and thank God everyday for all my blessings: a warm safe roof over my head, food in my stomach, improving health, a job I love, a functioning car, no debt!, plenty of loved ones, including family, and even when I’m feeling depressed, sad and “alone”, I am not bored or lonely — Thank God for all of the above!

My renewed epiphany is that I am Spirit in human form, both. “Self-realization before God-realization.” It is my job to confront my humanity with all it’s foibles and not to dismiss ANY aspect of it just because I’m trying to be “positive” and “spiritual”. In the midst of being human, coming to terms with such “imperfection”, and truly healing IS the path towards our human side finally surrendering the Ego, integrating with Spirit, and ultimately becoming that enlightened, perfect soul …the loving child of God that was buried underneath all that humanity!

Humanity comes and goes, lifetimes upon lifetimes, but the Spirited Soul is eternal. Nothing is ever lost, or truly sad, when I can keep that viewpoint…in fact everything feels truly blessed and I am SO authentically grateful!

A Life in the Day (The Eternal Present)

“Today is the Tomorrow I was talking about Yesterday…”

I recently made up that line, and I love it, because it really does remind me that every single moment represents an Eternity. That’s why it’s so important to stay Truly Present!~ Better not to be in such a rush…unless you’re simply going with the flow ~

We are all slaves to time and man-made clocks and calendars, more so now than ever before. That’s how we keep order in a man-made world. I’m all for that. After all, I’m one of those people who is very organized and has her schedule memorized, posted on 3 different sources just for good measure. I’m sure to spend a little “quality time” each night, curled up in bed with said “sources.” When I awake and plan my day again (usually in the middle of the night), I conscientiously pre-plan and pre-calculate all of the details, making lists and checking them twice. I especially want to avoid being late or uncomfortable later on…If I’m not 15 minutes early to everything, that qualifies as running late!

I’m so good at time management, I gave up wearing a watch long ago. It’s just my nature, one of the ways I cope with the world at large, and how I compensate for my (ether and earth) issues of wanting to be “perfect” and feeling “responsible” for meeting the needs of everyone and everything on God’s Green Earth…Talk about a heavy burden.  I know some people cope and compensate by swinging in the opposite direction. When “opposites” such as these come into contact with one another, conflict and discomfort is often a result (especially when the conflict occurs within your own self!). But I digress….

The Divinity within Nature takes that burden from me. I think one of the reasons I enjoy a bright full moon, a heavy rainstorm, or a sudden “trembler” (you CA folks know what I mean), is that it becomes quite “loud and clear” to me just who’s the “Boss!”

We shouldn’t ever lose sight of the fact that we are animals, mere human beings, who, try as we might, cannot and should not, control EVERYTHING! (Our vision is much too small for that.)

The Boss” beckons us, lest we forget that we are spirited animals, sons and daughters of Mother Nature. Abusing that fact, by belittling our own cycles and rhythms, and ignoring our innate Divinity leads to an unbalanced world full of unbalanced inhabitants!

….Oh Lordie, have Mercy on Us…

As we venture forth into 2011:

🙂 May we learn to treat every moment as the Present that it is! 🙂

Feasting, Anthropologically Speaking

On this special day noted for feasting, trading, food and family, I offer you another “KQED Radio Perspective” by my friend, archaeologist Mike Newland. He brings up a valuable point, the importance of “Feast” as a ritualized celebration of interconnectedness, borne of necessity.

As for me, I received my B.A. in anthropology in 1990, almost 21 years ago! I’m kind of “out of the loop” nowadays, but I still embrace the ideas of observation, analysis and interpretation that drew me in in the first place. Basically, I’m curious and self-reflective by nature, constantly asking questions about everything…Anthropology, and travel, was a perfect fit for me.

I have always viewed Food as Sacred. It is definitely one of the basics that unites us as human beings, and I was always fascinated by our relationship with it. When I was in college, I was especially interested in studying how various immigrants (to the U.S. in particular) adapted to their new environment(s). “Folkways and Foodways” were an integral part of that exploration.

Six years prior, one of my first realizations that we might be missing out on something as a culture, was in 1984 on a trip to Jordan with my friends. Our family of six entered a jewelry store, with a goal of buying some good quality gold items (cheaper than in the States). Nothing was under lock and key, or glass, but before we perused the merchandise, we were welcomed to sit down at a table, offered strong coffee and tasty treats, and engaged in friendly, casual conversation that had nothing to do with why we had entered the shop, or so I thought.

After about an hour, we got to view and purchase some jewelry. But it was obviously more than just a casual purchase at a random establishment. The “relationship” that was formed during that visit, was steeped in long-held tradition. It reflected a complex combination of conscious, and unconscious, views about the world and how we should, and need, to interact within it to maintain our “comfort zone”. We ALL do this, no matter where we are from.

Being only 19, this was one of the many “rich” encounters I had during my 3 week journey through Jordan and the Holy Land with my dear family of friends. I was privileged to have travelled with them back to their homeland, and to have had such a unique insight into their culture…(I hope to revisit this topic more with you at a later date).

And talk about “Feasting”, this was just the start. It was the BEST trip ever, on all accounts!

Today’s “Note to Self” (Keep It Fresh)

“Try, learn, read or do something different today. Experiencing Life in new ways keeps Me young and well-versed at “going with the flow.”

Still waters run deep…but it takes a steady influx of fresh water to keep things from getting stagnant…So Mother Nature, bring on the rains and hear Me sing!”

Today’s “Note to Self” (Loosen Up)

This is something I need to remind myself every danged day: 🙂!

“Release your grasp; stretch yourself; be open, patient and still.

Let your troubles, your worries…your old unneeded ways of ‘being’, pass on through.

Cradle what is left, gently, in the palm of your hand.

Keep your balance strong and steady; don’t be afraid to hold the ’emptiness’.”

Sometimes it's more beneficial to allow things to slip through our grasp, while we prepare, and wait patiently, for something new to come rest in its place.

My own sentiments remind me of a quote that I came across in a newspaper last year, while on vacation (and when I took this photo).

The quote, by Satchidananda, has since become a personal motto that I live and work by. I now see it manifesting around me all the time:

“There is a Divine Plan behind everything,

and if we allow ourselves to be used by that unseen Force

…many things can happen in a mysterious, miraculous way…”

And, on a final note, here is a link to a little story book that I’d also like to share with you. I consult it when I need an affirmative upward boost, towards a more “miraculous” frame of mind:
