Undivided We Stand

We are all entitled to our own belief systems, but I feel that we are required to respect others’ as well. I love diversity, the problem is a lack of tolerance. That, I think comes from xenophobia, an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners, or that which is foreign or strange. But don’t you think the world would be boring if we were all alike? Isn’t that why we go traveling in the first place? To experience new things? We were all born in a different place on this same planet, with values built-in to the mass national culture and our mini familial sub-culture.

I was raised a Catholic, in California, and have expanded my view to believe in a Divine God who is not divided up into various religions, which have been involved in politicized power-struggles throughout history.  All Teachers come to deliver the same basic message. Love. It’s the humans who muck it up, fighting over who is right. We don’t own God, God owns us. So why can’t we all share? Because we are human I suppose. If we were already godly, we wouldn’t be here working things out.

Most of what exists can’t be seen anyway, even Einstein said that. Therefore, I don’t believe that science has all the answers (yet); it’s much younger than spirituality. But I do think that science and spirituality are both valid forms of knowledge and can, and should, work together. Why all the disharmony?  More ethnocentric egos at play? (Our worldview applies to how we view science, as well as God).   There are plenty of Mystics and meditators throughout the ages who have proof that there is a God; that should not be so readily dismissed. The key is experience. One cannot really understand or believe in something until they’ve experienced it for themselves.

Questioning in the search for understanding, towards experience, is a noble endeavor. Yet, to do so is threatening to so many. Human beings are naturally fearful of the unknown. We are each on our own paths of discovery whatever that may or may not include for us. But I can say this: I don’t claim to know THE truth, but I claim to know MY truth…That’s what we are all striving for right?

God help me, I say! 🙂

There’s A Song & A Place For Everything Energetic

When I was studying polarity therapy, our instructor Miriam Jacobs, tried to get us to think of music and places that would invoke some of the attributes of the Five Elements in the Chakra System of our body:

Ether/Throat Chakra =  Expansive. Peaceful.

Air/Heart Chakra =  Frenetic. Rapid.

Fire/Solar Plexus Chakra =  Loud. Intense.

Water/Sacral Chakra =  Flowing. Rhythmic.

Earth/Root Chakra =  Dense. Droning.

Here are some of examples, as they apply to music:

Ether/Throat Chakra =  Absolute Quiet. Soft Flute Solo. Light Classical.

Air/Heart Chakra =  Madonna’s “Ray of Light”.  Jazz Improvisation.

Fire/Solar Plexus Chakra =  Jimi Hendrix’ Electric Guitar. Hard Rock

Water/Sacral Chakra =  Iz’ “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.  Rhythm & Blues

Earth/Root Chakra =  Cello. A Steady Drumbeat. Indigenous Music using Natural Materials.

And, here are some examples as they apply to place:

Ether = Wide Open Places ~ Views of Full Sky & Horizon, such as: Pasture, Ocean & Dessert, or Still Isolated Places such as sitting in a Redwood Forest.

Air = Wind-Whipped Perches, such as a Mountain Top (with prayer flags blowing!). A Busy City Street.

Fire = Volcano & Hot Lava Flowing. A Construction Site. A Loud Hard Rock Concert.

Water = Floating on a Raft, Sitting near a Fountain or a Babbling Brook.

Earth = Feet in the Sand. Laying on a Granite Rock.

What are some examples that come to mind for you?  I’ve just given you a eeny-weeny hint of a teeny-tiny head-start!

This has been on my mind lately, for obvious reasons. Ironically, or not, I got this link from a friend’s Facebook posting.

My Dad’s Teaching Legacy

The following was written for a framed plaque I presented at La Fiesta School on my 40th birthday, to a small group of family and the school principal. Before that, the auditorium that bore his name had no personal connection for the students that used it. Sadly, due to budget cuts, the school was closed last year, but I’m told that the Michael J. Begley Auditorium is still used for other purposes. (I wish I had a photo to show you, but the pictures I do have are not digital, I haven’t yet figured out how to scan them. As it is, the photo I am posting is an iphone photo of a photo!). Dad, here’s to you and all the hardworking teachers and dads among us.

Michael James Begley, Sr., 21 February 1925 – 5 September 1974

Mr. Begley was one of six children born into an Irish Catholic family in Omaha, Nebraska during the Great Depression. He served as an infantryman in WWII, married and migrated to California in 1946. He, with his wife Betty, adopted three children while working and pursuing his education. He received his Bachelor’s Degree (Social Sciences/English) and his Elementary and Secondary Teaching Credentials from the University of San Francisco. He moved  to Sonoma County in the 1960’s where he taught at Bayside School in Sebastopol, St. Vincent’s High School in Petaluma where his eldest son also attended, and John Reed School in Rohnert Park . During this time, Betty gave birth to their fourth child who later attended John Reed School at the same time that her dad taught there.

Mr. Begley was dedicated to his profession, colleagues and students alike. He was president of the Cotati District Chapter of the California Teachers’ Association where he was an advocate for teachers’ rights. He was well-loved and respected by his students who called him “a good teacher, a good human being”. He was a man of faith and conviction, known for his intelligence, sense of humor, positive attitude, and enthusiasm for organizing group activities, especially sports. He encouraged everyone to learn, participate and have fun. He had a sensitive and compassionate nature, coupled with a sense of discipline, personal and social responsibility.

Mr. Begley was a 6th grade teacher at John Reed School when he was diagnosed with cancer, had to go on leave, and subsequently died 10 months later at the age of 49. His fellow teachers donated their vacation days to him so that he could remain on the payroll, plus continue to receive medical assistance for his cancer treatment, thus completing his year’s term. After his death his students took it upon themselves to gather over 1,100 signatures from citizens in the community, door-to-door, in order to petition the School Board to rename the newly planned La Fiesta Elementary School after him. Their request was denied due to school district policy at the time, but they were offered the chance to have the multi-purpose auditorium named in his honor, which they accepted. When asked why they felt compelled to expend all the time and effort to pay special tribute to their former teacher, their response was, “He felt his students were important and we knew it.” And, “He always told us that if you believe in something, stand up for your belief. If you feel strongly about something, well, do something about it! And we have!!!”

So, from the family of Michael J. Begley, Sr. who miss him so much, we are proud of his life and legacy. We appreciate the support of all his colleagues and students, whom he also referred to as his friends. May this dedication serve as a reminder to be the best that we can be, to truly serve the people around us and, last but not least, to value and respect the teachers who are so instrumental in shaping our lives.

My Father’s Daughter

If properly tended to, the wound does heal, but the scar remains. This, in memory of my Dad…after 36 years.

This rather nondescript grave marks the resting place of a great man.

He loved to take family road trips, & wanted to be buried near the road. So here I am at the cemetery listening to the traffic roar by. Dad loved the open road, & so do I.

My mom never took me here as a kid. Maybe it’s because she believes, like I do, that he is not here…his spirit is anywhere & everywhere. Or, maybe it was just too painful for her.

I first started visiting him here when I turned 40, needed to finally grieve, & make peace with him & his passing. For that purpose, the knowledge that some tangible part of him is still here, historically engraved, is not to be underestimated. Being here also reminds me of his penchant for exploring graveyards, in whatever new town we visited. A true Irishman & lover of that particular facet of a place’s social & cultural roots.

Furthermore, he regaled me with stories of his childhood & younger years; he taught me my prayers & the Greek alphabet; he helped name my cat “Hildegard” & my Teddy bear “Horatio” (how cool is that?). Best of all, he did all this as he cuddled me, “traced my face” with his fingers (often sticking them up my nose to make me laugh), rocking in that old wicker rocker of my grandma’s as we listened to the train whistle in the distance. This rocking-chair-ritual was a treasured nightly event. It is the time & attention that is given to us by one another that is what is most remembered & cherished. Especially from a father to a daughter.

Thank you Dad for giving me so much in the 8 short years I had with you.

Who thought I’d be a mother…to a Blog?!

After a 9 month gestation, I’ve finally given birth to my cyberbaby and she’s quite the spirited soul :-)!  When I think back to the moment of conception at the Apple store, I could barely contemplate such a thing transpiring for me at this late stage in my life, being so timid, inexperienced and all.

I’m still adjusting to motherhood and how to best care for my infant. Guess we’ll grow together, and the rest of the world will just have to be patient with us and lend support…After all, it takes a village… 🙂

Birth of Gratitude

As I understand it, according to Dr. Metz’ Fundamental Field® Theory, the Fundamental Field Pattern of Life-Energy instantaneously manifests and unfolds at the moment of conception. It is the blueprint of what will become the physical body.  It contains the subtle energy patterns brought to us by our parents. At around 9 weeks, it is thought that the personal soul then enters into the Field with it’s own energy patterns.

On the topic of conception, the following was emailed to me by a client-friend and I thought it was interesting & worth sharing:

“Allow Gratitude to guide you through NOW to the moment of your conception, your earthly Being-ness.

As you journey through to the beginning of YOU, let Gratitude
be your guide, remembering a state of perfection, purity, and
one-ness with Source.

One might be surprised to realize how many times the physical
body re-creates itself through Gratitude. So it IS with our
energetic, intellectual, and spiritual Selves, too.

You’re beautiful, baby! Go Gratitude!

Imagine this Beloved Union happening within YOU – one beating true with Love and Gratitude. Feel this pure state of emerging Life bridging here with NOW, re~birthing *you*, US, everyone into a state of Grace, through the power of Gratitude.

Conception: Two cells merge, form a ‘vesica piscis’ – a deeply
sacred shape where the centres of two spheres or circles bisect
each other. Next sperm and ova pass right through each other
to become a single cell or zygote. Then, mitosis and the
chromosomes join, then migrate to North and South poles. A tube then forms pole to pole, the chromosomes split and migrate to alternate poles. This is the complete prototype new human. The zygote then splits into four cells and forms a tetrahedron inside a sphere. The next division yields a star tetrahedron/cube in a shape called ‘the egg of life’. These eight cells reside at the perineum – our centre (geometrically) and literally where we grow from. And an important esoteric plexus, besides, on which our energy field fixates. Anyway, eight cells divide into eight more, form a cubewithin a cube. After this, divisions become asymmetrical as we differentiate in all the tiny special little ways that make us, well, special! At sixty-four cells the embryo becomes hollow and the poles grown together and form a tube torus, one end of which will be the mouth, the other, the anus.

So, to sum up: Life begins as an ovum or sphere, becomes a
tetrahedron, then a star tetrahedron, a cube, another sphere,
and finally, a torus.

(Note: the symbol of Gratitude is a tube torus, too! wow!)

Divine Plan for a Control Freak

“There is a Divine Plan behind everything, and if we allow ourselves to be used by that unseen Force…many things can happen in a mysterious, miraculous way…” ~ Satchinananda

One can choose to believe or not, that is our free will. I used to think I believed this, but it was in theory, not practice. After so many unexpected things have happened to me this last decade, I had to let go of a lot, especially my need to feel in control, about EVERY thing, internal and external.

Now I choose to view my life from the above quoted standpoint. I’ve learned that the more I’ve trusted and surrendered, the more this notion has been supported.  I have learned that when I get in the way, I just make a larger mess of things. When I let go and surrender to a Higher Good, things always seem to work out in ways that I could have never imagined. These insights may be immediate, or come later in retrospect. That’s where Faith comes in.

Here’s just one teeny example that we’ve all likely experienced: You may find yourself getting annoyed and upset over having your departure delayed by someone or something, only to find out that if you had left moments before, you would’ve been involved in the serious accident you now see before you on the highway. It just wasn’t your time to go and/or to be involved in that situation. Now you can see being postponed as a blessing, and not a curse.

Being puritanical Americans, we should do everything in our power to be on time for our commitments, within safe reason. I am in full support being prompt, but we all should keep the larger picture in mind, always, not just getting stuck on the details…and this is coming from a someone who is a stickler for details!!!  I also know that my small brain cannot comprehend the organized chaos that is swirling around in the universe, that’s why surrendering control to a Divine Planner is one burden I’m happy to hand over!

Lastly, I will leave you with one of my most favorite Bible passages:

Matthew 6:25-34 – New International Version (NIV)

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]?   28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Is That Dog Walkin’ You?

Who is the Master, who is the Slave?…
Are you walkin’ that dog?
‘Cause that dog isn’t new.

Are you out of control?
Is that dog walkin’ you?

These Madonna lyrics from her recent song “Voices” remind me of how fickle the mind is and how quickly and easily it can put a grip on us, especially when external situations trigger internal turmoil, or vice-versa.  It is important to get to the root of our old patterns, but in the meantime we must have a toolkit of healthy resources that we can use to shift the impact our own negative mental space, or from that which is going on around us and is seemingly out of our control.

When I need to take a break, lasting just a minute or all day long, these are some of the tools I use:

Listen to Music/Dance
Draw/Doodle/Paint
Play Solitaire
Read/Watch Something Funny and/or Inspirational
Take a Walk, or Do Yoga
Take Photos
Go Outside, Look Into the Sky, with Bare Feet on the Ground

Breathe Deeply, Again, and Again, REPEAT…

Meditate/Pray/Focus on Gratitude
Cook Yummy Food, or Eat in the Raw
Eat Yummy Food (Alone or with Others)
Take a Bath, Shower, or Foot Soak
Take a Nap or a Rest, or Clean the House

It can only take a few minutes of slowing down in this way to make a huge difference.  I’ve even tried smiling, when I’m by myself and whether I feel like it or not, and it does actually help!  (See my YouTube selections under my Heartwarming Playlist, called “Bodhisattva in Metro” and “Validation,” as well as other items in that Playlist, as well as under Music and Places. That’s where I go).  These simple suggestions are not new.  It’s just human nature that we have to be constantly reminded of how such simple things can change our perspective by putting us back into balance, giving us a sense of energized, renewed centeredness and calmness. This is the space from which it is best to act.

It is more productive and empowering to be in control of ourselves, rather than forcing our control upon another (even though at times that is not our first tactic). We have the power to empower, ourselves and others, in one tall order. We just need to be self-aware enough to know when to tap it and when to cork it.

That Cagey ID: What’s Lurking in Your Shadow?

Oh my id, what an ID you have. Lol. (They’re not so unrelated. Was that on purpose, Dr. Freud?).

Art imitates life.  It was three weeks ago when this shot caught my eye. I’m finally reflecting on my own question and interestingly enough, it suits the photo:

“What is lurking in my cagey Unconscious?…Feelings of breached boundaries, feeling trapped and wanting to escape…that’s what”.

These old emotions have been long buried, wrecking havoc, now rising up and out, slow by slow…Yet another step on the transformative healing journey…a journey we are all on, one way or another. It’s called ‘being human’.

My Favorite Quotes @ The Moment

I love quotes (what don’t I love?)…

“There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way.” ~ A Buddhist Proverb

“Self-realization before God-realization.” ~ A Mystic Saying

“We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

“Up to the Twentieth Century, reality was everything humans could touch, smell, see, and hear. Since the initial publication of the chart of the electromagnetic spectrum, humans have learned that what they can touch, smell, see and hear is less than one-millionth of reality.” ~ Albert Einstein

Here’s a practical one from Dear Abby:   “A streetwise individual once told me, ‘the best way out of a jam is not to get into one in the first place’.  That tidbit has served me well.”

A practical favorite of my Dad’s:  “Everything in moderation.”

It is so true.  (As an aside, just to prove that Dad was also a gentleman, and a scholar, he was the one who, when I was five or so, named my teddy bear “Horatio,” after Hamlet’s dear friend a la Shakespeare, and my cat “Hildegard” after Hildegard von Bingen, an amazing historical figure and woman of many talents).

The personal quotes that I try to live by:

“Everything in its own time.”

“Let Go, Let God.”

“Carpe Diem – Seize the Day.”

“Meet people where they’re at.”

“To each his/her own.”

And finally:

“Nobody panic, everything’s gonna be alright.” 🙂

Well, almost. And for now…a Final Post Script. (These are a few more goodies that I decided to add in June, 2013):

“Don’t let your happiness depend on something you may lose.” C.S. Lewis

“Look on the bright side of Life.” ~ from the movie “Life of Brian”

How do birds fly? They take themselves lightly.” ~ MUTTS Comic Strip

“We are the most ourselves when we achieve the seriousness of children at play.” ~ Heraclitus

“There is a Divine Plan behind everything, and if we allow ourselves to be used by that unseen Force…many things can happen in a mysterious, miraculous way…” ~ Satchidananda

“I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as a fraud.” ~ C.G. Jung

“The kingdom of God is within you.” ~ The Bible, Luke 17:21

“I looked in temples, churches & mosques. But I found the Divine within my heart”. ~ Rumi

“Saints come into the world by the grace and mercy of the Lord. They do not come to make it a better place, nor to improve its lot, but to free us from our bonds of attachment and turn our attention towards the Father. They come to make us blind to this world and give us the sight to see the Lord”. ~ Maharaj Charan Singh

“May God in His mercy grant that every day we may be troubled, tried,
disciplined, or make some progress.” ~
St. Augustine (a true Spiritual Warrior!)

Heal Your Life, By Healing Your Spirit

In a recent blog post by Dr. Christiane Northrup, for Heal Your Life, she provides an excellent explanation of how we need to address the emotional patterns that set up our physical illness:

To read Dr. Northrup’s article, click here.

This is at the root of deep healing, as these old energy patterns contribute to our lack of complete well-being in the present. This is what I do for myself, and in my work with my therapeutic bodywork clients, and I couldn’t have said it better myself.
