Learning of the nearby ukiaHaiku Festival, definitely peaked my interest over something I had long wanted to investigate.  Haiku AND Ukiah — I like it already, just based on the wittiness of it all!  I have yet to actually go to the festival, or send in any entries, but a girl can dream, can’t she?

As I understand it, there are various rules and criteria for writing a traditional Japanese Haiku poem.  Of course modern times, and other cultures, have expanded on that tradition. The only Haiku rule that I seem to follow is to use the pattern of a set of three lines in five-seven-five syllable combination.  Here’s a wee example describing the beginning of my day today:

morse code on roof top
pitter-patter from Heaven
rhythmic dreams awake

morning noise loud roar
slipper-footed lightly step
daily news in sight

life beginning fresh
all the same but not quite real
eternal present
