Dancing With God, & My Mother

“When I meditated on the word GUIDANCE, I kept seeing ‘dance’ at the end of the word.

I remember reading that doing God’s will is a lot like dancing. When two people try to lead, nothing feels right. The movement doesn’t flow with the music and everything in quite uncomfortable and jerky.  When one person realizes that, and lets the other lead, both bodies begin to flow with the music.

One gives gentle clues, perhaps with a nudge to the back or by pressing lightly in one direction or another. It’s as if two become one body, moving beautifully. The dance takes surrender, willingness, and attentiveness from one person and gentle guidance and skill from the other.

My eyes drew back to the word GUIDANCE.

When I saw ‘G’ I thought of God, followed by ‘u’ and ‘I’ ‘dance.’ God, you and I dance.

As I lowered my head, I became willing to trust that I would get guidance about my life. Once again, I became willing to let God lead.”

~ By Elaine L. Guercio ~

I first read this poem in 2005, just after getting divorced. How I always loved to dance, inherited that from my mom, my first teacher. I had always wanted to take ballroom dance classes with my husband, and wanted it to be ‘our thing’. I still like to go out dancing, and luckily my mom still does too. She and her partner are in their 80’s and nothing keeps them from the dance. It warms my heart to see them gliding seamlessly across the dance floor.

This poem spoke to me in a deeper way as well, of course, about the listening, the trust and the surrender (to both one’s SELF and a Higher Power), that is required throughout our life’s journey.

This Guidance is always there to dance with us, to take the lead as we close our eyes, let go and soar, sail into a sea of light and sound…steering us clear of the major obstacles in our path…essentially ‘making the crooked places straight,’ as we let that lighthearted joy inside us bubble out.  And it does. Trust me.

But we are not perfect. Even when we trip over our own feet, fall off our shoes, choke on our spittle, and crash into the punch bowl 🙂 we just have to get back up and continue to boogie, baby!

Oh yeah, and don’t forget to hold on for DEAR LIFE.

My mom had this song on her list to be played at her funeral, though recently she’s been talking about not having one at all. In honor of her & engaging in life’s dance…Have a listen, while you sing & sway along:

  1. I just got this flash of you crashing into the punch bowl, knocking it all over other couples as you threw common sense to the wind and continued your joyful free for all with the greatest dance partner you’ll ever have . . . your Beloved, who’s loved you before you tapped your foot to the beat inside your mother’s womb.

May I have the next dance, Miss Scarlett?

  2. Michael j that was such a beautiful and comforting image, thank you.

But Rhett, before you can have the next dance, I’m gonna have to get this curtain rod out of my dress (remember that classic Carol Burnett skit?!).

Or frankly, I could just not give a damn :). No pain, no gain, no transformation (that’s when the joy part enters the dance hall and fills us with music!).

Definately something to remember! Especially as a supervisor–I like to try to let the person that I’m supervising lead so they can learn and grow. And….in my newish marriage.
    Thanks
